Problems w/K10D and Sigma Lens?

Hello,

I have had my K10D since February and have been pretty happy with it. I have noticed an issue that seems to appear when I use either the 50-500 or 17-70 Sigma lenses I have and wonder if anyone else has experienced this issue before I go to Pentax. I get a vertical zig zag pattern in "some" of my photos. Not all. Not sure why! Here is an example which can be clearly seen in the breast area of the heron. By the way, I pretty much shoot exclusively in DNG format.

Statuesque.... on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I haven't seen anything like that on my K10D with the Bigma. I have a bunch of Sigma lenses too (50 f2.8, 50-500, 105 f2.8, 18-50 f2.8). Thankfully no problems so far.

As I go back and look, this occurs with lenses other than Sigma but Sigma seems to be a bit more pronounced....I've found it in photos using a Pentax DA 18-55 also. I'm just not sure whether this is lens generated or sensor generated. If anyone's ever seen this please let me know..thanks!

Can you post a bigger pic? That flickr pic is tiny (maybe 400x300) and the "show larger" link didn't do anything for me...

This is as large as I can put here. I can change the flickr account setting so all can see all sizes I guess if this doesn't work...

That looks like some kind of moire pattern or some other sort of digital imaging problem. Very unlikely that a lens could create that sort of effect. If you were using a high ISO that could make it worse. I would also be sure that SR was off so that sensor movement wasn't an issue. But you probably need to send it to Pentax for warranty repair.

If one looks carefully at the original size (2300 x 3675), there is the same zig-zag pattern in the sky, very faintly, in the upper left-hand corner of the image. I've never seen this before. Can you see it on the original image before editing with software? If so, I'd send a copy of the original to Pentax to see if they have an explination.

Could be a camera problem. Try talking to Pentax Customer support to see if it's a familiar issue for them. Your K10D should still be under warranty I think.

I noticed that if you hit the enlargement logo at top left of the original photo, the problem becomes quite pronounced.,
I have never experienced this before, with Sigma, or indeed any other lens.
I suggest referral to Pentax for investigation of your sensor perhaps.
All the best of luck with it.

I could be wrong, but it looks like moire to me. I noticed a little bit in the sky also. I've no idea why it would show up only with the 2 Sigma lenses, or in that type of shot at all.

As I go back and look at other shots, this seems to be a problem that shows up in some shots and not others. I have found it (not quite as pronounced) in shots with the DA 18-55mm lens too. I have an email in to Pentax and hope to hear from them in a day or so. Guess I'll be sending it in after I get back from vacation! Hope they can fix it, love the camera and would like to use it to shoot semi pro after a while.

As noted in a previous post the upper left hand area (in the blue sky) exhibits a similar pattern. My best guess that the there is a mis-alignment or other fault in the bayer pattern screen.

If so this would clearly be a warranty issue.

By the way have you upgraded to firmware 1.30 yet? If not, you might want to do so to see if it makes any difference. Sometimes the firmware contains un-documented changes to the image processing software.

I have no similar issue with my K10D @ firmware 1.30.
