k-x: Issue with folder name??

I have set k-x to assign folder names by date. The format of folder name as documented by Pentax manual is xxx_MMDD where xxx is sequential number from 100-999.

It was good so far till xxx in my cam reached 130 (for example, 130_0519). However, suddenly today it reseted to 100 instead of 131, so instead of 131_0520, new folders are being named from 100_0520 onward. While this is does not appear to be an issue, it certainly created a problem in sorting the folder. Anyone face this issue.

Additionally, does anyone think that they should have used MMDD_XXX format instead of XXX_MMDD format just for the sake of better sorting.

Yusuf

Did you reformat or empty your card after reaching 130 ?

In the affirmative, the next folder name will be 100_MMDD. In other word, every time you empty the card, the folder name counter restart at 100_mmdd.

In the negative, do you have now two folders 100_mmdd in your SD card ? For example, 100_0520 and 100_04_19?

That is by design. I never rely on the folder name on the card to archive the photos. Always create folders on computer and copy the files over.

So, how do you think it should work?

OK.

So, how do you think it should work?

I assume you want some sort of continuous folder-incrementing scheme? Should the xxx part of xxx_MMDD increment with the MMDD, e.g.,
101_5030
102_0531
103_0604

Or something else?

I assume the sequential numbering resets after certain well-defined events, like maybe a card reformat, or deleting the previous folders from the card, or resetting a corresponding memory option in the camera.

I think relying on the camera folder or filenames as anything other than a starting point for renaming immediately upon import is a huge mistake.

I would agree with marc

I don't even bother with folder names, just fime names, where I set (on the K7) the camera name in the custom field and just shoot sequentially.

when I download, I put the files into a directory structure with folders by month, in folders by year.

Special events go into the month they took place as a separate folder, and may be subdivided further, for example, when I tour a city I will separate files by each attraction in the city.

I use all the time the date first and after the numeric, no sorting problem that way

I have a K10D, which names its folders in the same way, which I've never quite understood.

When I copy my photographs to my PC, I rename the folders to be purely based on the date. For example, 102_1216 (today) would become 20101216. Such a folder name then sorts naturally into date order. The image files within the folder, of course, are already named sequentially, and I leave them alone. This also avoids conflicts with folders I might have shot exactly a year ago, or will shoot a year from today.

Yes to noblepa. I also want YEARMODA (20101216) for my folder names. It seems there is no way to set this up in my K-x, but you'd think that would be a firmware possibility...

It's a standard; read the design rule for camera file system specifications if you want to know more.

The first three characters are the directory number (digits only) between 100 and 999.
The last five characters (uppercase alphanumeric) are free.

Stupid standard? Leave that up to you to decide but I guess it sounded right in those days.

the name file system is okay xxx_(date), but the xxx should be continuous like from 101 to 999, but it seems the kx will generate it as 101 every you have deleted all images inside your cards..

i am sure we don't want to end up with folder like 102_date1, 102_date2.. or they should just have an option you simple name the file folder as data since the first 3 digits are reset everytime..

This thread was started because that is what most people want. Or do I misunderstand you.

I, by the way, could not really care. I usually copy photos from inside a camera directory to another directory on the computer instead of the directory with contents. The naming in the camera is only a convenience for me so I can quickly find everything of one day.

Easy Renaming your folders

I was also unhappy with the folder format xxx_ddmm (which comes from K7 and K5) since I could not sort folders easily according to date. Then I found freeware Advance Renamer, Advanced Renamer - Fast and feature rich batch rename utility , which enables to rename as much folders as you want in few seconds. You just define several rules (combination of move, add, ....) and create batch. I changed the folder format from xxx_ddmm to yyyy_mmdd_xxx (2010_1224_131 for example) which can be easily sorted.
Every time you want to rename more folders, just define what folders and run that batch.
It saves time and nerves...
