If blower doesn't work, it's best to leave it as is... it's just too easy to spot the focusing screen and make it worse...

I changed the focusing screen on my K200D more than once and faced most of the problems described in this thread (except scratches). So please keep in mind some of the following:

Any focusing screen will change AE and AF in some way; this may not apply if the camera was designed for changing the screen, you use a screen specially designed for your camera model, and the database in the firmware holds the needed corrections for this screen.

Most of the dust you may see in the viewfinder is so small you wouldn't see it when cleaning the screen - just with a strong magnifying glass. When changing/cleaning the screen, it should be done in a clean room; as a substitute, you could use the bath room directly after taking a shower, which may reduce the amount of dust in the air.

Gloves made for household purposes may loose fine particles off its surface; special or surgical gloves may do better.

One poster recommended water for cleaning: if at all, use destilled water!

I never understood why everyone recommends the use of a blower, it may add additional dust, if you are not working in a completely dust-free room! I think there are special battery driven vacuum cleaners for mechanical wrist watches and electronic devices; as a substitute, you could use some self made valve for a standard vacuum cleaner which offering just a very mild vacuum. However, it could worsen the problem, as the filters in the cleaner may not be fine enough to hold back the dust we are speaking about, and the additional air movement in the room could stirr up more dust.

The worst thing is your hair and your clothes: wet bathing suits and plastic/rubber cap may help.

If you think I am exaggerating: I learned it the hard way!

i actually had the same problem and everything i did to clean it IN CAMERA made it worse. i resigned myself to the fact that i'd have to take the focusing screen out i i had any chance at cleaning it.

i went to the katz website and just followed the same instructions for swapping the screen (w/o the aid of their nifty tweezer tool) including the powder free gloves. once i got the screen out i cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and dried it with a can of duster. popped it back in with relative ease and now it's as good as new.

i really did think i would make it worse as i'm pretty good at effing things up worse when trying to fix them but surprisingly it worked out ok.

hope that helps
i had the same feeling when i went thru the novelty of my brand new k-x. everything started to get dusty, i had to buy a lcd protector and wipe the camera every morning to keep it clean. dust seen the viewfinder must be located and extracted.

and then I realized buying a used camera isn't such a bad idea.
