Anachronistic blasphemy? Nah... I'm with you on this one. This is the type of situation where a rangefinder be ideal.

I have taken a lot of shots at indoor theater productions using both the K10D and *istD. All have used the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 zoom, although some times I could have used a shorter lens.

I shoot at 1600 or 3200 ISO and use natural stage lighting

F2.8 is a must. F2.0 or F1.4 would be better.

You may wish to consider depending upon distance, something like a 24-70 mm F2.8 zoom. As a back up you should take, if you have one, an F1.4 50mm
