As I said, they wrote their own software to look at the data itself. These people do know exactly what they doing.

Sure it is, as far as the actual data is concerned. It's exactly the same image data. but FWIW, these same people have also analyzed the contents of PEF and DNG files to determine *exactly* what additional information is in one versus the other (and it does cut both ways).
