Who told you that it is "safest"? I have taken thousands of digital photos, and have only formatted the SD cards once or twice.

Original poster - I agree with the recommendation to get a card reader. They cost less than $20. I have never used the transfer software that is included with cameras. You have the most control with a card reader and Vista/XP/WIn98 explorer.

Good luck!

I was always told that reformatting the card is the best/safest way to delete files off the card... so that is how I have always cleared my cards after uploading the pics onto the computer.

Pentax photo lab has an easy file transfer function in the toolbar -I always use that and never had a problem. After turning on the camera or inserting the card I close the pop up window and open PPL and use the easy file transfer to load my images - then click safely remove hardware before tuning off camera. hope this works for you

I do it one of two ways :

with SD card reader:

put SD card in reader slot,
then it pops up a meesage in Windows asking how I want to view the files,
I select "...using Windows Explorer",
then the folder pops open,
I right-click, select "Copy",
and then right-click, "Paste" in a folder I've created on my hard drive,
then re-insert SD card in camera,
turn camera on, and re-format.

I Hope that this helps.

This is the simplest and easiest way if you have a card reader.
I bought a small USB card reader when i bought my camera.
I just find it easier than messing around with a 3rd party program where Windows Explorer works the best.
