K100D - Why Are My Images Disappearing?

I've had my K100D for about a month, and love it, but there's one problem: after I upload the images I've taken to my computer, they disappear from the memory card.

The first two times I uploaded images to my computer the images were still in the camera after the upload, but the last few times when the upload is finished, all the images are gone from the card.

I haven't changed any settings on the camera that would have caused this.

So, does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Are you sure you're not "Cut"ing them from the card instead of "Copy"ing?

This is an issue with the software on your computer, not with the camera. What software are you using?

I'm using the software that came with the camera. As I said previously, the first couple of times I uploaded images, they uploaded fine, and were still on the card after the upload. At about the third upload, they started to disappear from the card.

I'll have to re-read the Pentax software manual and see if they mention anything there.

This isn't the biggest problem in the world, it's just annoying that it started out of nowhere.

I will not give up.

I don't think I'm cutting them, and I didn't see any button that says delete after upload or anything like that.

It could be that you are "moving" the images.

The move command (also available under drag and drop) copies then deletes from the source.

You should also be formating the SD card - not just erasing the images.

I don't even use the included software. It shows up as a removable drive in "My Computer". I drag and drop my files to where I want them. After removing the camera from the computer, the card gets formatted.

You may have something there, PDL.

If I remember correctly, the first few times I uploaded my images I didn't move them and just shut the camera off after they were uploaded.

I'll give this a try as soon as possible.

Thanks for the idea.

Hmmm, I just tried two test batches of 6 photos each, and it's still the same.

My computer is on, and the camera is off when I connect it to the computer as it instructs you in the Pentax Photo Browser booklet.

When I go to , "My Computer," on the start menu, the newly created folder is there, but when I turn the camera off, the images are gone from the camera, but the frame counter shows the number of images that were on the folder subtracted from 689, which is the number of images on an empty 2 gig card with the camera set @ 6mp. After I format the card, the frame counter returns to 689 images to be captured.

I did not move the first test batch, but did move the second batch to "My Documents," with the same results: No images on the camera.

Back to the drawing board.

I do it one of two ways :

with SD card reader:

put SD card in reader slot,
then it pops up a meesage in Windows asking how I want to view the files,
I select "...using Windows Explorer",
then the folder pops open,
I right-click, select "Copy",
and then right-click, "Paste" in a folder I've created on my hard drive,
then re-insert SD card in camera,
turn camera on, and re-format.

with USB Cable in K100D

I connect the USB cable to the port in the K100D,
then I turn on the camera,
the same prompt pops-up,
I select "...using Windows Explorer",
folder opens,
right-click, "Copy",
open new folder on my hard drive,
right-click, "Paste",
turn off camera,
remove USB Cable,
turn on camera,
reformat.

I Hope that this helps.

Since you're using the software with the camera, check through options or preferences. Sounds like a setting in the software is doing this... I can't give you specifics because I don't use it. Haven't even installed it ;p

Thanks for all the ideas, guys.

I'll try them one at a time as I get the chance.

I'm still trying to figure out why it didn't do this in the beginning, but does it now.

I'll have to retrace all my steps.

On my old Canon digicam where I did use the included software, I had the option to remove after downloading all photos. Maybe the software is the same in that it doesn't remove photos if you're only downloading a select few.

You could try to un-install the software then re-install it and see if the problem still there.

I'm just going to have to sit down and reread the Pentax Browser and Laboratory manuals very thoroughly, and go through everything that's in the help section.

Again, thanks to everyone who replied, I really do appreciate it very much.

I'll keep you all posted.
