Sensor Gunk

Just got back from vacation where I suddenly found that I had accumulated lots of gunk on the sensor of my K10D.

I set the came to do a sensor shake at each power up. Didn't work.

I locked the mirror up and "gently"... oh so gently used a blower brush to try and dislodge the gunk. Didn't work.

Another photographer, with a D70, said that sensor was tough and could take a bit more elbow grease. I was leary about that, but I did buy a small paint brush with real hair bristles to work with but haven't done anything yet.

How tough is the sensor? Will it stand up to a small amount of force to clean it up?

If not, then what are my realistic options?

Thanks in advance.....
