My K-x is here! First photo

Hi guys!

First off, thanks for all the info and encouragement on here, your all wonderful!!!

My K-x got here today, all be it a second hand one but with the lovely Tamron 28-75mm lens.

Here is one of the first photos I took when it got here, it's my little dog Dudley, had to find something interesting to take photos of at home. Just for testing I had it set to sports mode as he doesn't sit still too often!

The K-x and that Tamron will make a nice starter. Congratulations.

What is with the rough spots on the left hand side of that picture between the dog and the edge?

I get that on some of my pictures from my K-X too and it really pisses me off because when they are printed those areas of the picture come out like hell.

Is there anyway to fix it in PP or to avoid it in shooting?

Could you be more specific about what you are referring to? I don't see anything "rough" in the background on the left side of the picture. Are you referring simply to the fact that the background is out of focus? If so, look up the term "depth of field" for information on how to control it.

It is happening in the top right corner too. I think it happens in the low contrast out of focus areas on this picture (although I have seen it happen with my pictures even in the in focus areas like foreheads). It is even more visible if you change your monitor to 16 bit although I can still see it at 32 bit and if I send it to get printed. Its like it gets kind of blocky where or something, kind of hard to describe and was hoping someone was familiar with it.

That's a really good pic of Dudley -
like the almost supercilious look he's giving.

The one on the right looks like clipped highlights. I don't see anything on the left.

I don't see a problem, anywhere. Any clipped highlight is insignificant and I would not underexpose the image just to get some background element perfectly exposed....

Well yeah in that photo it's insignificant. I only pointed it out because of the question about what that "rough patch" was

There are many bad first photos posted here to be constructively critical of, to help a beginner, but this photo isn't one of them.

It's damn fine.

Oh, now I think I see what you mean, although it's very subtle. It's JPEG compression artifact from too low a quality setting during the save after whatever PP was done and/or the downsizing that happened when the picture was uploaded.
