Dedicated M42 DSLR Body

ok. so i have some M42 lenses on the way (Helios 44M, Tak 1.8/55, Tak 2/55) and one of those chinese adapters you need the tool to remove from the camera body. i am considering looking for a used Pentax DSLR body to dedicate as an M42 body.

Using a body with shake reduction seems like a good idea, so the *ist line seems out.

not sure its worth the $ to get a K10D/K20D/K7 for what might be a limited use body (my main body is a K200D).

that seems to leave the K100D as a logical choice. Not sure used prices on a K-x or K-m would be competive to the K100D.

for those who shoot with M42 lenses often, which bodies have which features that you find useful with M42 lenses?

I don't shoot M42, but I do dedicate my K10d to manual lenses with a third-party focus screen.

I think your thought process is the right one - SR is an invaluable tool. I would skip a K-m (not much benefit with the 10mp sensor, probably worse high ISO compared to the 6mp k100d, at best on par), and either go with a K100d if you can get one under $200, or find a used K-x under $400 (which is a good possibility in the for sale section, sold mine for about that much). There aren't really any other benefits to any bodies in particular, m42 functionality will be the same. I would suggest to get the official pentax m42 adapter though, as it works very well and provides a nice mount that is flush with the body (as it should be!).

First, throw the tool in the trash. All you need to do to remove the adapter is to press on the spring that keeps it locked on the mount. Anything that will fit the slot will do.

As to your actual question, if I were going to dedicate a camera to M42, it would be the K10d. The choice is easy for me since I already have one though.

Actually now that it has been said, a k10d does make sense to me for the brighter viewfinder as well (should be able to find one reasonably priced too!).

Have you considered upgrading your main camera to a K20D or K-7 and using your K200D as the M42 camera?

I just might actually dedicate my K200D to M42 use also, if only I had a number of good M42 glass.

That is quite possible. I recently upgraded to the k200D from a K100d (which i gave to a family member b4 i thought of using it as an M42 body), so the K200d feels "new" to me. i have had great luck buying used pentax bodies.

If it were me I would buy a K10D (not much more than a K100...) and get a nice focusing screen. You'll be using pretty much all manual focus so you want a GREAT viewfinder.

Although I don;t consider it a dedicated M42 body, or for that matter a dedicated Manual Focus body, that is the primary use of my K10D since I upgraded to the K7D

I have a jinfinance diagonal split image in the K10D, which actually has improved the metering performance with manual aperture lenses, and is a pleasure to use with any MF lens, k mount or otherwise.

I say it is not dedicated MF because when I travel with only my AF zooms the K10D goes along as a second body.

I have toyed with the idea of getting yet another body, and leaving an M42 adaptor in it, but that would leave me with 4 DSLRS, *istD, K10D, K7D plus what ever else I get.

After getting a K-7, I've essentially dedicated my K20D, with KatzEye screen, to manual focus lenses. The AF was never that good, anyway.

Me too - and I switched from a jinfinance focus screen to a Focusingscreen.com and am very pleased that I did so.

prices

based on my notes, here are some recent prices for various bodies here, on my local craigslist, and ebay

K100D: under $200
K10D: $300
K20D: $550
K200D: $300 (my current body)

if i get the K10D, which of the K200D and the K10D is better suited for AF lenses?

+1

I have adapters living on my favourite M42s.
The adapter hooks out easily with fingernail.
If you are keen, remove the spring so the adapter comes off with the lens.
Not so good on stiff focusers

I like my K100d for other purposes, but the finder and screen on the K10d are better IMHO for manual focus. Also, most of my manual lenses are sharper than many of the zooms I use for digital, and the K10d sensor gets a bit more out of them. If I buy a K-7 or K-8(?), the K20d may move into this function.
