M42 Tak registration distance on a K20D

I picked up a 1970s vintage SMC Tak 28/3.5 the other day. Near focus is perfect but infinity focus is non-existent. Reason is that it will not screw in all the way with a standard Pentax M42 to K adapter. Anybody seen this before? I will be using this as a reversed bellows lens anyway so this is academic but just wondered if it is a common problem.

The Pentax dSLR bodies are k-mount just like the film SLRs were ever since 1975. The M42 lenses and the k-mount bodies have the same registration distance. Therefore, the 1st question I have is what do you mean by standard m42 to k-mount adapter? In other words, do you mean an authentic Pentax adapter or one with a flange? If you have the authentic adapter, the issue is with the lens, either the threads aren't allowing it to seat properly or the lens isn't adjusted properly for infinity.

Just to save everybody some time, yes, it turns out that this is a fairly common problem with old Taks. One fix is described here:

Shooting with a Pentax K10D: Fixing the infinite focus on a Super Takumar 24mm ...

Not for the faint of heart.

P.S. - Mods, you can close this down now.

Sorry, Blue, didn't mean to cut this off prematurely. It seems to be a case of the helical focus adjustment in some Taks rather than anything to do with the M42 adapter. I have the official Pentax adapter that sits flush with the mounting seat.
