Just got my k100d but.....

only one of my old lenses works. I have it set to "A" on the apiture. The other lenses don't have this "A" and wont let the camera work. What am I doing wrong? I read the owners manual but can't find the info I need. Thanks...

I believe I know what you are asking, so here goes...

Go into the Menu, specifically the Custom Settings section (must be enabled by checking the box).

Scroll down until you see "Using aperture ring" - change it to 2, which is Permitted. This allows usage of the lens in any position other than "A" or using the older non-"A" lenses.

Cheers,
Marc

In addition to what Marc said,

Menu> Custom Setting> AE-L bttn on M expsr>

Set it on "2" "Tv Shift)

Many people will tell you you need to set "FI with S lens used" to "2" (which means "Focus Indicator with Screwmount lens used). The people who will tell you that have no idea what "FI with S lens used" means. Unless you're using screwmount lenses, it doesn't apply to you. But there is no harm to setting it to "2" anyway.

To shoot:

1. Manually select your aperture by turning the ring (old skool style)

2. Press the AE-L button on the back of the camera. This stops down the lens, meters the light, and sets the shutter speed.

3. Press the shutter button.

Oh, and remember to focus, of course.

well this is my first DSLR. My other digital was an Olympus 1.3 megapixel from ump-teen years ago. I decided to upgrade when the camera on my cell phone had better picture quality than my camera!

My last SLR was a 1982 ME SUPER. I used that to photograph at car shows. I got much better pictures (of course) but had to wait for developement. I chose the k100D for above all, I could use my old lenses! That's a lot of saved money!

But if I could get a DSLR that can produce the same quality that the old 35mm still does then yea, Pentax it is.

New technology in a field that I am amatuerish in I will need some quidence. If not spelling correction too.
