Of course the Pentax *ist D takes CF memory cards, not SD cards, but the purpose of the upgrade is to allow CF cards GREATER than 4GB to be acceptable to your Pentax *ist D. The 1.0 version of the firmware only allowed 4GB CF cards.
The whole purpose of the original thread was to give a better explanation than Pentax did, of how to make the upgrade successful. Most people recognize that.

By the way, I did the upgrade to my Pentax *ist D with a 512MB card, as it's the only CF card I have. Worked great, once the card, which had been used in the camera before I bought , was formatted!
