What's holding me back is my great lust for the Limiteds.
Switch to Nikon, then you can be fed up with the lenses.

odd response from him, sounds like an insecure fanboy. generally i get this kind of thing from younger kids shooting more entry level cams than pros. on saturday when i stopped by to have a pint ang shoot a friends matinee i talked with a pro who was videoing it with a 5d mkII. we talked cmareas a bit (medium format and digital. He expressed admiration of the pentax prime lineup and medium format gear and said he was lusting after a 645d, i expressed lust for the video and ff capabilities of the 5d but did say i preferred the nikon layouts as I found the Canon very unintuitive for me. he said that was the thing that bothered him the most.
I've never run into anyone who was a true pro who would slag a kx and compare it to a d700. that's just sad

The latest (March 2011) issue of PopPhoto post their usual camera ratings page. Here are their top-rated cameras, 4.5 stars or more, ordered by 'street' cost (body only) in US$ at the publication deadline:

US$1100 - 4.5*- Canon EOS 60D (APS-C)
US$1450 - 4.5*- Pentax K5 (APS-C)
US$2500 - 4.5*- Canon EOS 5D Mk II (FF)
US$4750 - 4.5*- Canon EOS 1D Mk IV (APS-H)
US$5200 - 4.5*- Nikon D3S (FF)
US$6100 - 4.5*- Canon EOS 1Ds Mk III (FF)
US$7500 - 5*--- Nikon D3X (FF)

So, except for the Canon 60D, every cam with the same rating as the K5 costs considerably more. No other Nikons, no Sony's nor Oly's, made it past 4 stars. I'm surprised the Sony A850 (US$2000, 4*) didn't rate higher, as it and the costlier A900 (US$2700, 4*) are the only dSLRs with both FF and SR. They rate the A850 as "superfast AF" which, with the shorter register distance of the Sony's (necessary for many legacy lenses), makes the A850 my leading candidate for an 'upgrade' cam. If I had money. And desire.

I'm sure the Nikon D7000 (US$1200, 4*) is a fine camera -- if one wants to buy-into the Nikon lens family, with in-lens IS on *some* lenses, with no capacity to use M42 and other shorter-register glass, with no WR sealing, etc. There are many trade-offs. I don't think I'd want to trade off in-body SR for faster AF. But that's me.

I thought artists only talked about light, and pros only talked about money?

Zooms or primes? I was always under the impression that their top zooms were great, but expensive.

Those are some impressive numbers. I knew the K-5 was a good body, but to measure up against the Canikon 1D and D3 (they need to drop the "Ds," we know they're digital)! Very surprising. I used to lust after the 5D Mk II back when I thought FF and video really mattered to me. But after several commissions and much more experience and knowledge of exposure, I honestly find them both to be gimmicky. Maybe FF is useful for landscapes and architecture, but medium format film has proven its unrivaled power to me many times.

I'm a prime shooter, which is why I've loved Pentax for so long and probably won't switch. Maybe I'll just get a secondary body for more action oriented shoots.

I shoot high school football from the sidelines. I have not ran into anyone that talks down about my Pentax cameras. One of the Canon shooters told me that My K20D was probably a better camera than his Canon 50D. When I bought my K20D I had compared it to the 50D,and found that I perfered the K20D.

Their lenses tend to be more flare prone than Pentax lenses.

I would have told him I research Nikon and Canon and found that their iso was very muddy and Pentax iso was smooth as silk when doing portraits. Actually its true. That is whay I bought it. But the macro is muddy. But I have a really nice macro camera.

It's conversations like this that remind me it's all sci-fi to me and no one seems to be putting out a proper, precise, focusing screen.

I mean, seriously: nice glass, megagigits and whaatagoogles.... I *want to see.* Dial it in, bolt it down, *then* tell me about how studly your engineers are.

no, the 5D has a direct print button though.

Well all those funny thing. I once was somewhere, camerashop, and was developing a RAW in my K-7 to a jpg with some of the incamera tools. Another guy looking and said that his Nikon couldn't do that, walked away and the third guy said, well I have the same camera but my can do that. Funny don't know the tool in your hands.
