I started off using the USB cable but have used an SD card reader ever since the computer I was using experienced a power surge on the USB port when I plugged it in and fried the camera USB circuits. Rest of the camera still works fine luckily.

If it were Compact Flash card, taking it in-and-out from the card slot can be damaging for the pins if not careful. However, the SD card is designed to be more durable (thanks to Sandisk). I take the SD card in/out all the time (for my K100D, K10D and now K7) without any problem at all. Mind you that my K10D is already up to around 60K actuation count.
