Pentax Europe should take a look at that place. Good potential to exploit with marketing, if Pentaxes are that common there!

Pentax France actually seems to do a pretty good job of marketing in comparison to what we see in North America. I think every time i've been in france I've seen Pentax ads and cameras, saw quite a few in Barcelona as well, less so in London, but I did see them. Don't remember seeing any in Italy (at least rome,Florence and Venice)

Pentax is, indeed, quite good across Europe :

- the WG series are often among the most sold waterproof compact since the W90
- the K-x and K-r sold very very well in estern europe (mainly because they are cheap, well built compared to Canikon in the price range.)

And when it come to advertising, Pentax did since the k-r a lot of marketing :

- i see some ads in almost every photo magazine, at least for the WG series.
- they lent a lot of DSLR to magazine to test it, mostly with the 18-55 DA / WR, 18-135 (often praise btw), and the DA* zoom. So far, almost all magazine did a field test of the K-30 and i think it will be a hit here, if they keep going like they do now.

Among magazine Pentax is being consider like the cheap but solid way to enter DSLR, specialy if you like taking picture in dust and rain

Actually they're also liked as pro-like bodies (K-7 and K-5). There's also quite some Pentax advertising over here.

Just got the mid-2012 Really Right Stuff catalog. Cover photo was made by Joe Johnson (RRS owner) with a 645D. Not really getting my hopes up for better Pentax support from RRS re camera plates, but nice to see this anyway.

In the Philippines the Pentax name came as a hit at the time of the K-x and K-7 because of several factors:

1. K-7 was the smallest semi-pro body with outstanding WR features
2. K-x came in three other colors apart from black. Yes, it was the first; it was quirky, it was young, it was pop. The only DSLR with a non-black body back then was only the K-x.
3. K-x was a freaking bang for the buck deal with all its features versus the Canon 500D and the Nikon D3000.
4. The Pentax veterans were very active in the craft; with their work coming out with their new digital bodies, a lot of newbies got curious about this "third brand". The exclusive Pentax distributor in the Philippines did very little marketing or advertising.

cons:
Weirdly while the Q is the most-advertised body here, it is also the slowest-selling, along with the K-01.

in a different vein, my mother and elderly step father came to stay a couple of days ago. Says Mum 'shown Wayne your new camera'. Step Father - 'it's only a Nikon'.

It turns out that he has bought himself a cheaply built plasticky feeling D3100 with a twin lens kit. 'I couldn't afford an expensive camera like your Pentax' says he.

If only he had spoken to me about it first. He would have had a K30 (or even a 2nd hand K5) for less money, with a better kit lens; a far superior piece of equipment.and I have around 30 old manual lenses that he could have played with.

The power of brand recognition is such that he only knew to buy Nikon because as he said ' I read lots of camera reviews and they all told me to buy Nikon or Canon. I thought Pentax must be a more specialist, more expensive brand.'

Oh the irony.

Was at a wedding this last Saturday, among a number of P&S cameras were three DSLRs promininent. Two pentaxes, my K20 and a person with a KX, and a Canon with a flip screen being used in video mode. KX user is of Italian nationality thus supporting comments above about European product penetration.

And one of the great aspects of the brand, most everyone can exchange and share/mix and match their lenses! Who needs a big camera bag if you have a bunch of Pentaxians as friends!

Actually the thought of loaning anything out or borrowing anything myself is horrifying. With the potential for damage I wouldn't be able to calm down enough to enjoy any part of it.

I'm guilty of being a selfish bastard really, I won't recommend anyone else around me get into Pentax because I don't want them asking to borrow any of my stuff, no joke. Some of that is simply because you can go weeks if not months sometimes without seeing some of the stuff I own listed for sale at any price and I don't have any stuff I'd like to do without for months. If it were a modern DA or something I'd probably hand it out to anyone who is responsible. As far as borrowing others stuff, no way, I can't afford to replace it so I refuse to risk it.
As far as the no friends with Pentax thing I do also like being able to go head to head with Canikon friends too, especially with all my old equipment vs usually new fancy stuff.
