I went to a concert at Yuba College in Marysville, CA in late February to see Alex De Grassi & Michael Manring perform.
While getting my camera gear ready, the guy sitting next to us asked "Is that a Pentax?" "Indeed it is!", I said. We hit it off after that, talking all things Pentax or course.
Rick asked if I visit Pentax Forums. Turns out, Rick is RioRico!

Here are a couple of pics from the concert if anyone is interested.

How is he now? Last I've heard he had severe health problems...

He seemed fine to me. He and his wife were on an extensive western US tour in their motor home, and made a detour to see Alex De Grassi. Afterwards, they were headed down to Death Valley to see the SuperBloom.
He is still shooting Pentax (K-20D, I believe), and is saving up for the K-1. He said he has quite a collection of film-era glass.

Thaat's very nice to hear, maybe he'll start visiting the forum again. "quite a collection" is quite an understatement- IIRC the count was something like 300 or 400 at one point.

In the past two months I've heard "Pentax is shit" from two different photographers. I calmly and politely changed the subject.

Well, proof is in the results not the camera you use.

Sad for them really.

So I was talking to a friend at work, and somehow we got on the subject of cameras. When he found out I had a Pentax he said, "Oh, you're the guy that bought one." Made me laugh, we are few and far between.

I've had all of two people scoff at Pentax. One was a Leica snob. The other shot Canon and said he didn't like the mount? ??

Yes, it appears that way. Though I find that Pentax users are way more friendly and open to small talk than many Canon or Nikon users.

Maybe I'm just lucky then. I have a Canon EOS 5D MK3 guy who is a very good mate and came to the K1 launch with me and another mate who has just moved from Olympus to Sony and certainly doesn't regard pentax as inferior.

David Bailey - probably Britain's greatest living photographer said in a recent interview that it's all shit and getting bothered about what camera you use is ridiculous - he shot a recent series with an iphone just for the fun of experimenting. He uses whatever suits the project from medium format film all the way on down through digital SLR to compacts.

I'm inclined to agree. Arguing about cameras is like religious people arguing 'my God is better than your God' and there's been way too much blood spilt on that subject in the world.

I was at a Gluten Free Food Fair in Abbotsford, BC the other weekend, and stumbled across a random person with either a K-3 or K-3ii around his neck. Was busy with food samples, so never said anything however.

It's the first Pentax I've actually seen someone using in I don't know how long. 2 trips to Mexico, 1 to Disneyland, 1 to Disneyworld, and while I've had a few short conversations with Nikon and Canon shooters (all polite mind you), not a single Pentax to be found. And I'm ALWAYS peeking at what brand/style of came people have slung around them.

Makes me feel kinda special, but also kinda lonely...

Omg omg, I spotted a pentax user and caught him in a photo to prove it - I didn't want to scare him off so I took this pic in "incognito" mode, but rest assured, he is the main subject here.

You can just barely make out "Pentax" in the full size photo (click) and also see the green ring on the 18-135mm lens. He appeared to have a K-3/K-3 II.

As I walked past, I told him, he had a cool camera

In Washington DC over the week-end and saw no less than 4 Pentax (3 old guys and 1 twenty something woman).

Just noticed, that at least one person thinks Pentax can survive freezing cold:

Actual sighting @ 1m 56s, but the whole video is interesting.
