I was inquiring as to whether the K-70 was available in Canada today from my local dealer (it is). In the course of the conversation, I learned there is at least one K-1 here in Newfoundland as they brought it in and sold it. Have not seen it nor any other pentax in the wild.

In my area, although Pentax on the wild aren't common, they're not rare either. It's not unusual to see one from time to time and, no, it's not because I always fall on the same guy! In a local store where I go check from time to time for used equipment, Pentax lenses usually disappear rather quickly. And since I don't buy them all, I guess there must be some other Pentax users in town, and at least one I know beign a PF member.

I have always thought of Pentax as niche company and I've never thought it to be this rare. I guess I didn't care much about it 35 years ago. Now, due the advancement in technology, changes that will make your system obsolete is a major consideration when going into a system. I hope that there'll be more Pentax users so that we won't become extinct. More promotions and ads please.

That was me. The store ordered the K-1 in on my request.

The father of one of my son's school friends (in Conception Bay South) used to shoot with a K10D. However, he was drawn into the Nikon camp a couple of years ago by the allure of "full" frame.

I'm just back from a nearly two week long trip to NY state and Ontario. Five days in NYC as well as some time in the Buffalo / Niagara area, and a few days in Toronto. I don't think I saw anyone else with a Pentax DSLR save for a guy at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. He had some older lens on it, maybe the 16-45, or similar looking from that era.

Hit two large camera stores that I bet everyone has heard of. At store "B" I talked to a guy about the K-1 they had on display. He seemed very non-knowledgable about the camera and tried to tell me the K-1 was quite heavy. I took out my K-5II, took the lens off both cameras, and asked him to pick them both up. Suddenly he's not singing the "the K-1 is too heavy" song. He then tried to tell me that my best move, if I wanted to upgrade cameras, would be to buy a Sony. He didn't think they had sold many K-1's or anything else from Pentax lately. And again pushed Sony.

At store "A" I looked at their K-1 display model and asked the salesman I was talking to about it. He says that he had sold a number of them, people seemed to really like the camera, and seemed generally interested in both Pentax and the K-1 specifically. I preferred shopping at A more, B was just a bit too much circus for me, but having serious camera shops in the area made me wish I had either at my disposal

Oh you lucky dog. I have a small sailboat over in Holyrood. Come take my picture with it! I'd be honored just to have my image pass through a K-1!

I can't justify a K-1 for my purposes (especially after re-engining my sailboat with a brand new diesel engine this spring ), but I am taking the plunge on a new K-70 as an upgrade to my much beloved, much used, and much hiked/sailed K-50 storm trooper. It should arrive soon, they say.

Some pictures from beyond Conception Bay South--Brigus, Holyrood, Harbour Main rock (the boat in Brigus is a marina-mate's, not my own)...

Last 2 very much push camera and lens to limit as they are near 100% crops.

Seeing that the bald eagle is the symbol of the USA, he has every reason to look grumpy these days!

Just finishing up a 7 day cruise to St Maarten, San Juan and Haiti. During the trip I saw a number of Sony cameras, a slew of Canikons and only two Pentax Ricoh cameras, both mine (K-01 and WG-20)!

Out of about 5,000 people, you think I would have seen some more!

at the horse races today were a couple of canons, one nikon gal and a pentax dude (me). So if you like screwing around with statistics: pentax users are as common as nikon ones!

I was out on the beach yesterday and it was kinda windy. Some guys went swimming and all I saw were people taking selfies using their cellphones. There were only 2 Pentax cameras their. No Nikon, no Canon, a Sony video cam and one Olympus which belongs to my daughter. Pentax won that round yesterday.

Well her Olympus came from me. I gave my old 4/3 system to my kids to use. I promised her that I'll get her a k-s2 if shows me good grades. But now, if I have the money and if she's got the grades it may be a k-70.
