A good point, and the small problem with selling bodies on the marketplace- it doesn't often grow new Pentax users.
Hopefully there are some donated old bodies doing the rounds in schools- get them while they are young! lol
In my country, them bodies will surely get newbies, for K100D and the like is selling far cheaper than the cheapest low-end canikons K100D is selling for about $200 complete with kit lens, while 1000D & D40 due to popularity usually $300 body only.

The good thing about being a small community, Pentax users in my country knows each other. We have a small internet forum and a Facebook group. Our gears are usually 'handed over from generation to generation'. My first Pentax, a K100D, I was the third owner. Now that camera belongs to my 'newbie' friend, sold it to him a year ago when I got a K20D from a friend who bought it new.

I took my 645n with 120 macro mounted, on an Adorama focus rail, on my Manfrotto 3001 tripod to shoot the native azaleas in our pine island in the front yard. Our next door neighbor Joe, who is rather strange, looked at me kneeling in the leaves and shook his head. A few minutes later I removed the rail lowered the tripod as far as possible to shoot a dog tooth violet. Joe's wife Sylvia called out to ask what I was shooting and commented "That's an impressive camera! Is it a Nikon?" I told her it was a Pentax and shot 120 roll film. I refrained from telling her that Nikon never built a roll film SLR; that data wouldn't have made any difference. And so it goes....

What's so strange with using a Pentax? Is it like seeing someone using a sponge to brush his teeth? Some people and how brand image affects them, hmm...

Now that I'm thinking about it, I have never encountered another Pentax user in the wild.

This is how I feel whenever I encounter a Canikon user that wants to lecture me about how superior their DSLR is.

Yesterday we drove up from the border to Apache Pass and Fort Bowie National Historic Site, north of Chiricahua National Monument. We hiked across the high desert around the old fort. Along the trail we encountered a couple folks -- and one was carrying a 645D! My first sighting in the wild! Wow, that's an impressive camera! We chatted briefly. He's a new member here.

I recently joined a local photo club. Out of our group that day, there were 2 Canon DSLRs, a Nikon DSLR, 2 Pentax DSLRs, and a Pentax K1000, not to mention a bunch of misc. P&S cameras. (So as far as SLRs were concerned, Pentax made up half.) No one was pushing one brand over another.

Just an observation: During the meeting, the "teacher" of the group let me shoot with their upper-tier model Nikon. I didn't like it at all. The layout was crowded & fiddly, the controls didn't have the positive, tactile feel of my K-x, and when I tried to press the shutter release halfway down to focus, it fired because it has a hair trigger. Just my personal preference, but I much prefer using the Pentax.

WOW you've seen a 645D in the wild!!!! I've yet to see one not only in the Wild but in a store (despite some dealers locally listed as "carrying it" - read as we'll order one if you drop the cash down - no refunds on special orders

Why stores are fun:

It's near impossible for me to have one, but at least I got to hold one! I just hope Ricoh's moves will lead to more stores carrying real Pentax items on their display shelves for customers to have a look and hold.

I feel ya. Same here. And I come across these people almost every day... (by the way, is that Jennifer Lawrence?)

Observation: There are at least two Pentax users somewhere around here.
Proof one: Local principal & kids with a K-7 or K-5 and 18-135
Proof two: A Pentax hood, judging by the shape from a 50-135 or 60-250, pro stuff anyway, found dangling on a branch one day while we were on a walk.

Be careful. The ones in the wild can be quite elusive and can get aggressive if you spook them, sort of like Sasquatches, but not as tall or hairy (usually). :O LOL
