Wait, what? You found a guy in his late 20's who doesn't have a computer?!

that would make him belong to a tribe much scarcier than the Pentax family

I find that most Pentax users I've met tend to be more educated about their cameras than the average C & N users I've met. One of the fathers at my kids school called me up and asked if I'd take photos of the graduation. I asked him why he wanted me to do it instead of him, since he owns a Nikon d90. I was stunned by his reply which was he only shoots in auto mode and doesn't really know how to use the camera, so he wasn't confident in taking graduation photos.

I've met a few educated C & N users but I've met many more "uneducated" users who shoot auto only. It seems people buy what the salesman recommends, which is what they have on the shelf, which is C & N's. I bet if the stores had some K-r's & K-5's available, they'd sell them just as easily as the C & N's.
Maybe this would explain why the only thing rarer then a Pentax users are people that use lens hoods.

Ran into a Pentax user at a geyser in Yellowstone. It was a minute or two after talking about the particular geyser that I noticed the brand, and mentioned something about it. He said his friend had all sorts of stuff and "a 1,000-dollar fisheye that does perfect fisheye shots". I pulled out my 10-17 and said "try this". He took a shot or two, and his son took a close-up of the dad's nose. We then went our separate ways, though we met up again at another geyser later. He asked if I'd take a shot of both of them. I said sure, and fired off a couple with his K10D set on green, with the kit lens.

Saw a Pentax user in Cologne yesterday. Didn't dare to talk to her, and she probably didn't notice me, busy taking photos. Really good looking young Japanese (I suppose) lady, well dressed... and carrying a K5 if I'm not wrong. Other brands may be more popular, but Pentax has the more attractive photographers.

Friend of mine shoots a canon450d in auto or 'sports' modes only... On paper the 450 and the K-x are 'fairly' equal but my shots come out better (even if I use the kit lens only) and this I agree is down only to the fact that I know my K-x more than he knows his 450d...

Saw another Pentax user at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, NY last week. It looked like a White K-r with a DA 35/2.4 or maybe a FA 50/1.4, I didn't want to stare.

went to the Zoo on Canada Day, saw a ton of Nikon, only a couple of Canon, 1 Pentax (besides mine) and one Sony.
Cell phone picture shooters outnumbered all of us about 10 to 1
p/s had little presence
saw a couple of m43 oly units

At the Cleveland Zoo yesterday, not too many DSLRs, mostly Nikons. I did spy one K-10 though.

Again to Longwood Gardens, this time for the fireworks show. Saw a ton of Nikons, a lot of Canons, 3 Sony's (two Alphas and a NEX), 1 Pentax (Ist D), and an Oly.

Every 2 years I buy the wildlife photographer of the year book. The first one I got in 2007, you had a good mix of camera´s Pentax too 35 and MF. in 2009, the 35 of pentax was already gone, still a few MF shots made it. this year, there is one shot made by a Toyo field camera, all the rest is made with Canikon. Does this really mean that they are so much better? Nope, as a shot made witha 1000D and a 18-55 lens made it.

I was at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago yesterday and spotted a guy with a red K-x and red kit lens. I spoke to him briefly, complimenting him on his choice of camera. He said it was a great camera, but didn't say anything about me holding a K-r. Maybe he got it just for the color, as he was wearing red also. I think if I bought a red or white K-r or K-x, I'd be tempted to shoot with the kit lens a lot. But it's really too short for the outdoor animal shots and too slow for the low light indoor habitat shots at the zoo.

When I decided to buy my first Reflex camera, I was looking into Nikon, as my father had one when I was young. When he learned what I was looking for he told me a story of a time when he traveled to japan on a business meeting. He said "I was convinced I was to buy a fantastic Nikon camera, but when I got there all I saw were PENTAX... so, look'em up!"

I did. I loved the idea of old glass on new cameras! And I found my K1000 at a pawn shop. No automation, no high-end glass (50/f2). That's the camera that taught me photography. I once showed up to an event with it. The other photographer carried a Nikon. First shot we had, we both had the same idea and as I took the shot he turned and said "I love the sound of your camera" That's the coolest thing I've heard so far. I went forth into purchasing a K-x at the beginning of this year, and so far, I've met only one other Pentax user; a japanese friend who found an MV-1 amongst his father's old stuff.
