Interestingly enough the first dSLR I held in my hands was a Pentax a friend of mine bought a while ago. It was one of the first Pentax dSLRs Pentax *ist something. I remember him talking about old/cheap/fast primes
Then the wave of Canons came. 2 of my closest photography-friends own a 20d and 40d. One has Nikon d40 and another one just bought a used Nikon D90.
When I decided to buy my first dSLR 3 weeks ago I did some research and narrowed it down to Nikon D7000 and Pentax K5. I was considering Canon as my first option (because I could borrow lenses/advice from my Canon friends), however Canon does not have a model comparable to Nikon D7000/Pentax K5 in their line up. I was leaning towards the Nikon precisely due to the fact that Nikons are more widespread which does give a certain level of confidence in the brand. However since I have no brand addiction really, I was just waiting for the best deal and Pentax happened to be on sale (~$200 cheaper than the Nikon). So I got it.
And so far I do not regret this decision. A nice bonus was that my old Soviet lenses are M42 mount so I can use them with an adapter. Plus I really like this community. It seems that Canon and Nikon people are many and scattered around internet, while all Pentax users know this forum.
As for rare, lately I was shooting mostly film (when I had time) with my Leica M3, Zenit 19 and sometimes Zorki 3M. This is when I get really weird looks from other people
