I am the only one in my entire university campus (in Bangalore) that shoots with Pentax...
The fact that Pentax doesnt enter Indian market doesn't help one bit...

should count as rare... right?

Very rare

Here in the Dallas area, I have only see 2 other Pentaxians in the wild; a little-league photographer with a K2000 and a jeweler with a K100. The K100 interestingly enough was in immaculate condition, being used with macro diopters for product shots. When I asked if it spent all 6 years safe indoors, he explained that it was actually his son's camera that spent years around his neck in ANTARCTICA as a study group attached to the film-makers of March of the Penguins! The little Pentax that could.

I'm actually Malaysian (Sabahan to be exact). I just happen to be studying in Bangalore.
I brought the camera into India from Malaysia.

There are few Pentax shooters in Bangalore if not entire India.

I had an experience in a camera store in Bangalore, where this Indian guy acting all high and mighty with his Nikon D90 and belittling Pentax and my K-x - calling it 'Pathetic'.

Little does he know what the K-x is capable of or rather... what a Pentax is...
I had purchased the K-x over D3100 and 1100D after an extensive comparison...

I just told him to google up TIPA Awards 2010 for K-x and read up the specs and price for the camera versus his 'high and mighty D90' before he looks more like moron.

... we (Pentax Shooters) are rare indeed...

Unfortunately Pentax compacts have generally been relatively poor. That has meant Pentax has not been picking up as many new recruits to the brand as its competitors.

He probably didn't know his D90 and the K-x share the same Sony sensor and that, like this D90, the K-x can use screw-drive lenses (D lenses in Nikonland). All he knows about the K-x is probably that it's a Pentax, and it's entry-level.

This may change with the Ricoh branding; the Ricoh compacts (GR, etc) are really good ones, compared to Pentax at least. Problem will be with P&S people relating Ricoh to Pentax...

New (3 months) Pentax convert here in Pittsburgh. First Pentax sighting in the wild. Older gentleman with a K200D (I think). Approached him and bonded over the Pentaxian brotherhood. Anyway, it was exciting for me to see another Pentax user in the flesh. I know there are a couple of us from Pittsburgh on the forum, though. I've got my eyes peeled!

I have just returned from seven weeks as a tourist in Europe armed with my new K5.

During the seven weeks in many of the usual tourist spots (Prague, Berlin, Lucern Vienna etc) I saw only THREE other Pentax SLRs. There were squillions of Nikons and Canons of course but only three Pentax SLRs.

Despite being the odd one out I am very happy with my K5 which is a big step up from my previous K100.

I saw only one other Pentax during my visit to San Diego this weekend.
The cams were mainly iPhones, followed by Nikon/Canon DSLR's, then M4/3, then point n' shoots.

I visited Japan - Tokyo, Osaka and the Fuji area last week. Made one of our group members buy a K-30, one buy a WG2.
Saw quite a few K-x, K-5 and K-20s.. mostly with the kit lens, and a few with FA primes.

I hope folks here have noticed this in other realms of brands of products, that the bigger the company the more convoluted the value of their products become. Their websites that support their clients/customers become over-filled, their telephone service becomes inefficient, their product line-up becomes diluted and conditional upon other factors. Companies that become too big, become fake. I like that Pentax is right in the middle, they have heart.
