I would have taken the chance to explore what his rationale was. As an engineer and experienced photographer I think I could have run some rings round him

Pentax did their image no good by being so late with a FF. Even if you don't use a FF (and many Canikons don't), the presence of a FF in the brand marks it as a professional contender. Of course, the fact that Pentax make a medium format and Canikon don't is a good riposte to the suggestion that Pentax is a mere snapshot brand.

I have a different impression of Pentax - when I first bought a camera (1980s) Pentax were one of the big 5 in 35 mm (Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax). Minolta and Olympus seem to have dropped out, and Sony have come from no-where with their quirky FF cameras, leaving Pentax where it was IMHO.

There are many people who would never buy anything from Sony on principal, following the root-kit scandal : Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal - Wikipedia

Sony bought Konica-Minolta, kicked out Konica/Minolta as brand names, and continued the camera business under their own brand. Did the same to Ericsson when they entered the mobile phone market. That's why I'll never buy anything Sony.

I've only joined Pentax about 3+ years ago. During the film days I was using Canon and Nikon. In 2008, my first digital camera was an Olympus e-410. So you can say I don't have brand loyalty to Pentax. However, I chose Pentax because I like it. I know the system's disadvantages and I can live with it. To me the important thing is, I like what I have and I'm comfortable using it.

I recently took a trip to Japan. While I was in Tokyo, Kyoto, & Nagoya, I hardly saw any DSLR users & the few that I saw were either Nikon or Canon. It was mainly cell phones & some mirrorless cameras like Sony & Olympus.

However, I did see one Pentax user in the Gion area of Kyoto. That was cool. I was probably the only "baka gaijin" with a Pentax DSLR. Hahaha!

proud owner of lens:

Diam x Length
95 x 241.5 mm (3.7 x 9.5 in.)

Diam x Length
91.5 x 203 mm (3.6 x 8 in.)

and then you extend the length with the lens hood

not as large as some but not really petite

It's alright. We know you're just trying to rid yourself of that whole "former lawyer" thing!!

Sony and Minolta entered the digital camera arena together with a technology sharing partnership in the late 1990s. Then Konica acquired Minolta in 2002, mainly to get its photocopier and medical imaging businesses. Within a couple of years, Konica-Minolta shed itself of many of Minolta's assets, including its camera business, which it sold to Sony. The terms of the sale did not include the Minolta name. As a (now former) Minolta user, I found this pretty disappointing, but not nearly as disappointing as the Minolta Z1 digital camera I bought in 2005.

Yesterday, while visiting the Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City, I met a girl sporting a Pentax camera. Her camera seemed to be an older film camera with a pointy pentaprism all black. Meeting another Pentax user in the wild, where I move is very uncommon.

So, what did this guy say? What was the conference about? Is he announcing new lenses or the K-3II successor?
