Do I need to add a lense for my upcoming Med Cruise

I am taking my new white K-x on a Med Cruise in October. I plan on taking my Sigma 17-70mm lens, Sigma 10-20 lens and Pentax 28-105mm lens. Do I need another? Thought about buying a Pentax DA 35mm f2.8 macro! I am not taking my Sigma 70-300mm lens...want to get closer to subject. Past European experience has shown I don't need a long focal length lens.

Are you going to the same places as last time? I'd take the 17-70 AND the 70-300. Wide to long, covered.

I have been to Europe 12 times but to Italy just once before and this time we will be in Italy most of our 12 day cruise.

That sounds good except I'd take the 10-20 as well to cover the UWA. I don't think I could go without my 10-20.

How about a fast prime for low light? FA 31? Well it may cut into the cruise budget.

I enjoyed my last Med cruise with just the absolute minimum of kit, one K20D with grip, twin batteries and Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 on the front.

I loved every second of traveling light and making the most of every opportunity with the kit I had, almost like back to basics. I can recommend it anyone once in a while.

I took a non-Med cruise early last year, down the Mexican Pacific coast. (Warning: Carnival Cruise Lines sucks.) I took a pile of lenses. What I *used* were... my DA10-17, DA18-250, and FA50/14. Were I to re-do the trip (shudder) I'd take my Zenitar 16/2.8 instead of the 10-17, and add a M28/2.8 and Nikkor 85/2. After the cruise, I drove across Mexico for a couple months, with the pile of lenses, and what I used were... the 10-17, 18-250, and FA50, and a Raynox DCR-250 for small stuff. Unlike some, I like having a long reach in small towns, for picking out inaccessable details, and that's why the 18-250. Your mileage may vary.

If you can't turn this into a good excuse to buy a lens, you're not a true Pentaxian!

In Italy, you generally find that your lens is never wide enough, and your fast lens is never fast enough.

Depending on your style of shooting, a tele might or might not be useful. If you say you didn't use your 70-300 last time, then leave it at home.

For my part, if I returned to Italy, I would bring:

Sigma 17-70
50 mm f1,7
DA 21 f3.2
FA 100-300

I would not bring my macro lens, but I might leave the 100-300 at home and bring the M-150 f3,5 instead. I would also not bring my WR kit lens but would think about it a long time.

My two cents.

Last time I was in Italy I was using a superzoom. I took very few pictures at the long end, but often found myself wishing for wide. Lot's of very scenic, very cramped spaces

. I'd think the 10-20 and 17-70 would cover most of your needs very nicely. If you wanted a third lens, either a fast prime or something long. I don't see the 28-105 offering you much that's not already covered by your 17-70. My .02.

Any reason is a good reason to buy a new lens.

Are you on holidays or are you on an assignment?

Depending on what you want to shoot most - architecture (when you disembark); portraits (on the ship); food (what they serve you onboard); the ship itself (rusted paint, funnel and smoke, staircase); the night sky (stars?)... Your preference may help you decide what kind of lenses to bring along; and don't forget; they can cause "soreness" on your shoulder! Enjoy the cruise!

You could add a teleconverter, it won't add much weight to you're bag, but allowes you making the tele-shots you would miss without it.

Unless 105 mm are really important to you, it seems that Pentax 28-105 is more or less redundant if you bring Sigma 17-70. Given that you are not taking Sigma 70-300, this thought appears even more worth considering... I would suggest that you bring Sigma 10-20 for tight spaces, architecture and vistas, Sigma 17-70 for everything else and a fast prime (say FA 50/1.4) for low light situations. Then it seems you would have all but tele end covered. But you seem to be content with that.
