SD card chopped by the K-7 :-) & advice for a new one

Dear all,

usually after taking pics, I remove the sd card from my camera, insert it into the sd card reader and transfer the pics.

Unfortunately, yesterday something very weird happend: as I inserted the card back into the K-7 I felt a sort of counterforce...stopped pushing...and when looked at the card, I saw that a small part near the lock lever was effectively chopped :-) by the K7. Obviously, the card is unusable - there are card error all over on the screen...

Honestly, I've inserted the card into the right position :-)...handling an sd card it's a habbit, something like eating...

Anybody experienced anything similar?

So...now I really need a new one - and I intend to buy a 16 gb class 10. Anybody experienced with Kingston or Kingmax? I've read that there might be some problems with class 10 cards...

Regards,
Tudor

ps: from now on, I'll only use the usb cable for transferrring pics...

I had a card's casing break recently, but I had been using it for over two years, I believe. It was unreadable by the k-7 just because it didn't fit properly, but my laptop could still read it, so I managed to transfer all the data.

As far as card brands go- as long as you get one that's not a cheap chinese version, you should be in good shape.

Kingston sound fine, Kingmax I don't know. Sandisk is still the standard to match.

Heard of Kingston, not the other brand, but for me I only use Sandisk.

get a sandisk or kingston instead. I would have second thoughts on buying an SD card with a brittle casing.

the sandisk and kingston are top of the line. but can be pricey especially the Class 10 type.

if you want a cheaper yet very reliable alternative, the Patriot Signature LX and Transcend Class 10 are also great.

After having failed cards losing lots of pictures I learned my lesson. SanDisk Extreme III's ONLY for me.

yeah. it's enough for regular shooting. but personally for my needs, I would get a Class 10 for faster speed.

I had a Sandisk Ultra II break on me. That sucked. Luckily I got all the pictures off. The card lock lever just fell out. I still trust Sandisk more than any other brand however.

That's what I'm using. I've had it for only a couple of months, but no issues so far, it works like it should.

Does yours have a lifetime warranty? My Extreme III's do.

I've been using that one weekly for a year or more.

Yep, there is also an aging poll about memory card failure. Very non-scientific options and answers, but about 72% reported never having a single issue.
