My Kx consistantly produces files 11-15mb in DNG raw format. The variable is the amount of detail in the image.

Thanks for the info

As I only shoot raw DNG 99% of the time with the K-10D, I never checked the pef option.
I think the key answer comes from "bymy141" in that K-7s have a different compression program, stuffing more into less. I hear DNG is the future.
Thanks.

There's also the choice ACR gives you of saving the metadata in a Camera Raw database, which helps eliminate the .xmp files from the folder containing the PEFs (I personally hate those xmps).
It seems the K7 DNG's embedd the XMP data directly into the DNG, which is cool!

Pentax K-x Review | Digital Camera Resource Page

Weird, it says here that the K-x should have around 20MB raw files at full... I don't think I ever reached that amount yet.

I've had some of mine on my Kx hit the 20mb size. I always use .dng for my raw files.

CS5 should have no oproblem with PEF providing you have installed the relevant raw file update for your camera if the camera came out after CS5 was released. There's no real difference in working with either, except that with PEF, metadata is stored in sidecar XMP files rather than in a special XMP area within the DNG file.
There is a difference in file handling between lightroom and CS5.
If you use DNG in lightroom, the file gets export "instant" without creating a PSD or TIFF to photoshop.
You can also merge to HDR or panorama instantly because of this.
