Aah.. the sound of a Kx. Apes with a pepper grinder bashing with a typewriter

Love the camera, not so much the racket it makes.

Tried to take a shot of my 3 year old asleep, focus woke him up before the shutter!

Yeah, at first I did not care how loud it was (as this was my first SLR ever) until I started taking pictures in public and noticed people noticing me and also waking up my dog trying to shoot him. Hopefully the KR will be less loud, myabe even on the quiet side.

That is certainly one nice thing about the K7 - I think people forget to mention how nice it is because you can hardly hear it to begin with.

Oh. Sorry. I thought this was a thread talking about the various groups involving Jack White.
My apologies for the confusion.

I have never used a K-x, but if its anything like my old K110D, I understand what you are dealing with. not sure about ‘on the streets’ though. I don’t know of any busy street where plenty of photo opportunities exist that the shutter on an SLR would be a problem regarding noise. (6x7 not withstanding) the K-7 is a world apart in this regard though. not as quiet as some make it out to be (or at least mine isn’t) with a DA lens, but if you pair it to a nice heavy, solid manual focus lens, the shutter becomes nearly silent. yummy.

I always assumed that the noise level was generally what they all sounded like. I hear every person who I see with one, and they don't sound that much quieter (different yes) to my ears. I can hear my friend taking pictures about 15 feet away with his D300. I've even been at work related press events, and I would be able to tell what side of the room the photographers had moved to without visual aids. Either I hear really really well, or they were all using old cameras.

My K-100D scares the cats, K-7 shutter does not even make their ears twitch. Poor things must be half deaf.

Cheers, Mike.

Maybe I'm losing my hearing, it doesn't seem that loud to me, although I've only had one for 24 hours.

The loudness of the shutter isn't constant. It seems to depend on a few things. The faster the shutter speed, the less noisy it is. Also add a telephoto or heavy old manual lens and the shutter sounds much more muted.

use it side by side with a K-7, or even an old istD for that matter. you will hear a difference for sure.

I haven't tried shooting anyone asleep. But I have to say, I love the sound of my new K-x... so far. Haven't noticed focusing sounds, just the shutter release racket. It's music.

Will try that if I get a chance, the only other SLR I can compare to is my SF-1.

I did put on the 55-300 last night, and its focusing was noisier than the 18-55.

Is shooting a sleeping kid with manual focus a new concept for you?

I never noticed much noise except when using live view (oh yeah the zzzt zt of focusing... not that loud, really). Go figure.

I sold mine yesterday tho, in favour of my K200... just couldnt adapt to the Kx for some reason. Not the noise tho

The focus is definitely loud - much more than my previous camera (Canon Rebel XS), but the shutter is MUCH quieter than my K100D or my Rebel. The Rebel's shutter was so loud, every picture of my cat was blurry because it scared her.

At least with the KX, I can go stealth and manual focus if I need to be quiet. There's nothing you can do about a loud shutter.
