I'm going to rent the Pentax 18-250 f3.5 for that trip. I'll see if that gives me quality I can live with.
I own this lens and I like its versatility for outdoor use - plenty wide with nice reach. Good image quality. Indoors it's ok as long as you stay on the short end of the range or use a flash. My only complaint is it focus hunts more then my other high-use lenses.

Strange but apparently true. Maybe that's why the 18-125 gets so little attention - it really provides no advantage whatsoever over an 18-200.

Interestingly, when I had my K100D, an F3.8 lens would only stop down to F4. Even though aperture is logarithmic, that .2 value can't matter THAT much, I'm just wondering if newer cameras make use of it, or if it's a marketing ploy.
I'd bet it's just a matter of the camera always rounding off reported apertures to the nearest half stop (or third stop if your camera is configured that way). chances are good it's still shooting wide open even though it reports the aperture as f/4. I figure that's no different the kit lens appearing to change suddenly from f/3.5 to f/4 at 19mm. It's really just a case of the aperture values being rounded off.

I doubt that the difference in IQ would be noticeable--even if it went the other way.

However, as Marc noted, that is probably why these lenses don't get much attention. Theoretically, it seems that a 7x (18-125) zoom should be sharper, faster, smaller or cheaper than a 14x (18-250) zoom or what is the point?

With the FA-J 75-300, I try to keep it under 260 if I can. Results are decent! Certainly I got some vacation shots on my last trip i would have missed with the 35-70 that was my other plan. But the 50-200 is pretty well regarded as well. And comes in a WR version, which would be tempting to me if I was doing it all again.
