Screw Mount lens on K100DSuper

New to this and definitely an amateur. I have MANY screw mount lenses (70's) so just purchased a K100DSuper body with adaptor to utilize these lenses. I have tried everything to attach the adaptor and lens and can not focus. The adaptor appears to hold the lens too far from the camera, because if I hold the lens where it should be positioned, things are in focus. I purchased a T-Mount f/Pentax K online with the camera body. HELP!

This post should probably be in the Beginner's Corner. Your problem is that you bought a generic adapter that doesn't allow infinity focus. An adapter that allows infinity focus will sit inside the camera.

Or perhaps you have a T-mount adapter rather than an M42 - K adapter?

Hang in there. Once you sort out the adapter you'll be pleased with the results from your screw mount lenses on the DSL.

Go to the Pentax store and buy their adapter.

Does your adapter look like this:

Pentax K Mount Universal M42 Screw Camera Lens Adapter - eBay (item 220660364495 end time Sep-02-10 09:29:12 PDT)

or this:

M42 Lens Adapter Ring for Pentax K mount K200D/K110D - eBay (item 280510145177 end time Sep-18-10 01:10:14 PDT)

The first one is not a genuine Pentax adapter, but it is identical. It fits entirely within the k-mount opening on your camera. It is flush with the lens mounting surface. This type of adapter will allow infinity focus.

The second one has a large flange that sits OUTSIDE the k-mount opening, adding a mm or two to the lens-to-sensor distance. This will definitely prevent infinity focus.

If you have the second type, that is almost certainly your problem. If you have the first type, then something else is wrong.

This is a t-mount adapter:

T- Mount T2 Adapter for Pentax K Film Digital SLR - eBay (item 130424558068 end time Sep-23-10 21:11:51 PDT)

Note how thick the t-mount adapter is. In addition, while the t-mount thread looks similar to the M42 screw-mount, it is not the same. Both are 42 mm in diamter, but the M42 is coarse thread (1 thread/mm) while the t-mount is fine thread (0.75 thread/mm). Trying to screw an M42 lens into the female end of a t-mount adapter will damage the threads of the lens, the adapter or both. And it won't work anyway. An M42 lens would be WAY too far from the sensor. You probably couldn't focus further than about five feet, depending on the lens.
