One final thought..
Took some test shots.. Mounted on tripod, image stabilization on, and off.
The ones w/ I.S. off, are sharp!

Does stabilization always add some noise to the picture, and that's why we can turn it off, or should I still consider this a problem that needs to be repaired?

Stabilization does not add noise. However, when mounted on a tripod,it can actually magnify the vibrations that are still present. That - or something to that effect - is why you are *supposed* to turn off SR when tripod mounted, and why the 2-second timer option (for mirror lockup) automatically turns off SR.
