It's all about the glass...
Sometimes a shooter will move in a direction that could require changing mounts. Though for the most part, we tend to stick with the kits we build whenever possible.

I had a K-x (18-55, DA21, Tamron 18-250) but sold it after a long trip to Asia earlier this year. Really liked the camera, esp the highISO quality. Rarely shot below 800asa, even on the beach. But I was interested in the new crop of mirrorless cameras for traveling, so I sold it while it was still hot and planned to get a replacement by this fall. But the only m4/3 or mirrorless cameras that could come close to the K-x image quality was the Sony NEX, but it was, well, a Sony. And I needed a telephoto lens, and they ran $800-$1000 for these cameras! So when I saw the K-x w/ 18-55 AND 55-300 lens listed on Amazon for $629, it was a no-brainer. I'm back to the K-x!

Also I would not base your decision too heavily on the video option - none of these cameras are going to do video really well. The biggest problem will be sound - to get any decent sound you are going to need an external microphone, which is a hastle for traveling. The video option is really nice, but I think of it as sort of an extra for fun feature. Also, what makes the Nikon D3000 video any better than the K-X's?

I don't have a video capable SLR, so I am not one to comment. My friend takes amazing videos with his Canon 5D.... but that's a whole other world, where he is living .

Wow! You made out like a bandit. Best price I've seen for that is around $660 (couple days ago). I paid almost $100 more mid-July. The price does jump around, considerably!

Yes, the price did jump back up to $699 shortly after I bought it. I think the $629 price was ment for the kit with the 55-200 lens, but Amazon mistakenly listed it with the 55-300 lens. Even at $700 its a good deal. I was tempted to get the Nikon 3100, but with a tele it would have been well over $1000. Most of the big players have decided to load down thier lenses with IS and focusing motors, raising their cost and size, and reducing their reliability. I hope Pentax will bring out more affordable lenses as well as their Limiteds. But the bottom line for me is image quality, and I would be surprised if the new crop of cameras this fall can significantly improve the outstanding image quality of the K-x.

And actually, the K-x doesn't do that bad with video (unless 1080p is what is attracting you to C/N) as evidenced by the many examples on vimeo. You just have to get used to how to use the video mode/lens combinations for the most part. If you are trying to really get into video, then of course, you will want something else.

How much price drop for K-x can be expected? I am waiting for Photonika and release of K-r. I don't need the K-r with the extra mps. I would love to get the K-x kit with 55-300mm lens.

I had a canon SX10 is and used it for video and just got the k-x myself, and the video is suppose to be better than the sx10 was which I thought was more than acceptible for casual use, and so much easier that the old tape camcorder I use to have.

Haven't used the video yet but th samples that I saw lead me to believe that i will be just fine.....

I was more interested in the quality of the photos which will be what th camera is used for 95% of the time....

Did you buy the K-x with 55-200mm lens? I check Amazon and the 55-300 Kit is selling for $722.00.

Yes I bought the 55-300 kit. Wait for it to drop. Price does fluctuate a lot.

What's wrong with Kx video? Am I missing something? Once again it comes to lenses...I have shot some, quite frankly mind-blowing, video with my RED camera. Sound is MONO but most think it sounds great. I ALWAYS have my Yamaha Pocketrax in my shirt anyway and simply merge vid to audio. No HDTV output? No sweat...why the heck do you want to tear-up your camera using it as a

K-R = 850, D3100 = 850, T2i = 900

K-x = 350 on the marketplace

I hope this answer your question

D3100 with two AF-S VR lenses = $950

T2i with two IS lenses = ~$1100

Kx with two lenses* = $630

Kr .... who cares

I'd choose the Kx unless you're super serious about video, the D3100 will present problems when trying to find cheap lenses, the T2i will blow all your money from the start, and the Kx probably has the best image quality out of all 3, and if you still crave video then you can buy a dedicated camcorder with the difference, and it will AF-C better than the D3100

*both the Canon and Nikon two lens kits come with 250 or 200mm lenses, and the DA-L 55-300mm that the Kx kit comes with has stunning image quality and is agreed upon being one of the best consumer zooms out there
