Thanks Stone G., that certainly must be the major part of, if not the complete answer, to my stated difficulty. I had neglected to realize that the "Noise Reduction" setting was a default on the DL. I've reset this to "off" and since it should be clear either tomorrow evening, or the next, I'll be able to run a test. Again, my thanks!

You do realize that you can test it at home sitting in the comfort of your favorite sofa?

Here's my first attempt at stars with the K1 and F 50 f/1.7. I had to use jpgs in DSS because it had a heck of a time with the RAWs. This is a stack of 63 6 second exposures at 6 seconds, f/2.2, ISO 16, no flats or darks, and I had to pull the exposure way back on the tiff. I am not happy with it, but here it is: https://i.imgur.com/auVL8ds.jpg

May I ask if you have used the Astrotracer for the series? And if the answer is yes then why at so short exposure time? (and if not - why not?)

I have tried astrotracer on 3 occasions and have not been successful with it on the K1. The GPS shows that I did it all properly, but I still get star trails. I will try again when the weather is more cooperative, but so far astrotracer has been absolutely useless. I even used my phone to control the camera to try to get stuff right.

On my K3 I only got astrotracer to work properly a few times, same with the K5, so stacking seems the only way I can get things to work.

Strange thing that. I used it on the K5 in former times and could regularly expand my exposure time to factor 10x - 20x without trails. Now I have the K3II and do not use Astrotracer anymore since I have a small Star Adventurer Mount that serves me well up to 90 seconds at 400 mm without guiding.

But even without Astrotracer at 50 mm F2.2 on a high quality full frame cam you could extend the exposure time to about 10 seconds, lower the ISO to 400 or so and pull the dim stars and nebulas out of the cellar in the 32-bit-tiff later in pp if you stack 60+ pictures (as tiff or raw files). Noise should not be an issue with the K-1

I agree with Pete_XL, this is strange and would have it checked. With a 50 mm lens on my K-30 I usually limit myself to 90 s just because there is virtually no risk of star trails even if I don't calibrate.

I will have to wait for the next clear night, which is at least 10 days or more away according to the weather forecast. I swear, Indiana swapped weather with Seattle.

thanks! and i am always happy to answer questions if you have any.
These are pretty typical single frame(non pano) astrotracer images with some curves processing in the color channels.

Single shots or blend of 2 images (foreground and stars)?

Thanks Mike. But the Astrotracer introduces blur in the foreground, correct? You must have composited two images, as zzeitg suggested?
