Vivitar 2500 on K100D

Iíve just purchased a K100D and being on a well stretched budget am looking at using my old goodies with it. A screw mount lens adaptor makes the old lenses fit like a glove and a couple of test shots look great.

My question is the use of my Vivitar 2500 flash. Iíve read some earlier posts about voltage considerations but didnít see that anyone had any actual experience, I measured the voltage on the 2500 at 11.54 vdc. Someoneís previous post states that someone at Pentax said 25 vdc is the allowable max.

Is all of this correct? Does anyone have experience in using the Vivitar 2500 or similar flash around 12 vdc? I certainly donít want to fry my new treasure.

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

David

The Pentax recommendation was for the istD. I don't know what it is for the 100D.
Tel 1.800.877.0155 and ask them - they're really helpfull.

I called Pentax this morning and got the expected reply. I talked to Randy and he said that they don't have the specs on the maximum flash trigger voltage from Japan and that they don't recommend using anything except Pentax flashes.

I assumed that I would get that response, but thought it was worth a try since you spoke so highly of them.

Sorry about that David. Actually I think it was Randy that I spoke with as well - unless every male at that number is called Randy.

Are you saying all the males at Pentax are randy?

If you want to use a flash with an unknown voltage, you should check out the Wein Safe-Sync hotshoe adapters. These reduce higher voltages to a safe level (6 volts). My local store carries them and if your's doesn't the major mailorder photo outlets do....like B&H, Adorama, etc.

Wein's link is: Safe Syncs

hmmm... I just acquired a Nikon F3 and it has a Vivitar 3200 on it, which I'm guessing is similar? I'm very interested in your findings.

Make no assumptions regarding flash trigger voltage. TEST each flash before deciding to use it.

My Vivitar 2500 tested out to about 13.88v and works fine on the K100D.

My Vivitar 2000 tested out to somewhere around 228v and I wouldn't put it on a digital camera without a gun being held to my head.....and maybe not even then.
