Similar, but not the same. I find this overlay interesting:
DigitalFotoNetz.de :: Thema anzeigen - Pentax smc DA 35/2.4

It is possible that they use a similar formula, but have "cheapened" it. That certainly would explain the loss of the f/2 aperture. If the overlay is correct, it probably also suggests that this is not an FF-capable lens.
Pentax did state in Japanese release that the DA 35/2.4 has the Ghostless Coating like the FA 35/2 had. I haven't seen anything to indicate they actually cheapened the elements.

Both lenses have 6 elements in 5 groups. I'm not sure whether the optical formula is public, but it's possible that both lenses are very similar.

EDIT:

Based on the pictures on RH's blog, they do have a similar optical formula.
Both lenses also have:

0.3 M minimum focusing distance
0.17 maximum magnification
Aspherical element(s)
Ghostless Coating
45mm maximum length

BTW, Rice Low doesn't know his arse from a hot rock.

But if the drawings are correct, it is clear that the front elements are smaller, which would indicate the loss in aperture.

All of the elements are supposedly 1mm or so smaller in diameter in the DA 35. However, the aforementioned specs are the same. It is possible these lens could actually perform better than the FA 35/2 optically. That part can't be determined from paper.

It doesn't seem Pentaxians are ever happy. All they do is complain about what they don't have instead of seeing what they do have. Two awesome announcements today. A new lens and a new camera and all the comments are about how much of a failure this camera and lens are when no one has even tried them yet. For one it shows that Hoya is listening to its customers and giving them what they want. ISO 25000 come on that is awesome. New improved AF, great too, more frames per second, illuminated focus points, and a solved battery problem. WOW...when will we find something else to complain about.

The new lens well we wanted a inexpensive lens...now we have it and man its complain city.

I say CONGRATS PENTAX ON THE NEW CAMERAS AND NEW LENSES...I'll be getting one of them i'm sure.
Here here. I have had a Pentax for a while now and the new K-7 is brilliant. I went into Pentax because it was the best value for money and my K-m used get great shots so I'm sticking with Pentax now. The only down side is most shops don't stock over the counter Pentax stuff, but I like not being a herd animal!
Go Pentax!
