Sigh, the way the K-5 is priced, it'll be at least another 1-1.5 years before I ever upgrade.

I bought my K20D at the end of 2008 with the expectation of buying the following generation (K-7) at the tail of of its cycle but the specs on the K-5 look good enough to completely skip the K-7 and keep waiting until fall of 2011 at the earliest.
Same here, but I'm still with a K100D

The D7000 has a 100% Viewfinder, 39-point AF with 9 cross points, weather-sealed alloy body, and the same Sony 16+ Megaapixel sensor as the K-5. Amazon is an Authorized US Reseller and with them selling the D7000 for $1199 do you really think new buyers will choose the K-7 body instead when it will sell for $1599? Nikon has also had an 18-135mm kit lens since the D90, so that is not an advantage. The Nikon D7000 kit with the 18-135mm VR lens is $1499 - less than the K-5 body alone!!

I really love recent Pentax cameras in general, but the K-5 is seriously overpriced. 33% more than Nikon's comparable model will not sell K-5 cameras.

I think the MSRP of $1599 for the body only is a serious mistake. That is more than the current MSRP of the Canon 7D ($1499), The Canon 60D (at $1099) and the new Nikon D7000 ($1199 for body, $1499 with 18-135mm). Prices will drop, but why is Pentax handicaping the K-5 right from the start?

The pricing is NOT competitive, so the K-5 will sell to Pentax owners, but not new buyers. The camera looks like it corrects most of my complaints, but it hardly stands out from a D7000 with the same sensor or the D60 and 7D with higher res.
I think the price will come down in line with their competition. I see it at around $1099-1199 (Euros as well) withing 2-3 months.

If you are in Nikon camp, you would see the D7000 at the same level as the K-5. However, if you are in Pentax camp, you would see the K-5 as comparison to D300s and 7D. I can understand why people think K-5 should be on par or cheaper than D7000.

Why does Pentax have to offer better value?
I've said this more than once, but I'll say it again anyway. Pentax made a seriously boneheaded move several decades ago when the decided that they would be the cheap and cheerful alternative.
All this netted them was a user base who only cared about one thing, that they could get it for cheaper.
It also got them a quick trip to Chapter 11 and a forced buyout from Hoya to stave off their complete demise.
Now they start making really good stuff and the bitchers and moaners start whinging about how whatever they are making costs too much, like as if Pentax should be able to magically pull better pricing out of it's corporate derriere.
Note to boneheads: they tried this for 20 years or more and look what it got them, a user base that only knows how to complain about the price and a brush with bankruptcy.
To the guy who has owned or tested everything, did you test the colour accuracy with a densitometer?
If you didn't, just exactly what did you test with?
Do you really think that at 7fps it needs to be faster?
Do you really think that with the number of retarded reviews from the instant pseudo experts who have popped up like lice on a mangy dog since the internet went mainstream that calling yourself a camera reviewer, retired or otherwise is a badge to be respected?
Cameras are best reviewed by photographers, not geeks who can write HTML to make web pages look pretty.

I completely agree, I know the price of the K5 will decrease a lot sooner than Canon's or Nikon, but at 1600 for body only?! that's asking a lot, espeically when the Nikon looks similar if not more superior in areas.

I believe the K-5 is a killer camera! It's not a matter of "IF" I upgrade from my K7, it's a matter of "WHEN..." I can't wait.
I am in the same boat. Just waiting to see real life image samples.
So glad the "7" body is still there.

you can see improvements right here
That is a Pentax?? Wow. I'm so used to my K20 where I can jot down notes while it refocuses on the next frame I don't know what I would do with such speed. On the other hand, do you really think it sounds like an old typewriter?

Oh but sadly I really can't justify an upgrade right now. I'll wait until the price drops below $1K and then maybe if I can sell my K20.....

I am going to repeat myself, and THIS IS from Pentax's mouth: The K-5 is Priced against the 7D and D300s!
This is what Pentax said before they came out with it, and they said NOTHING about it being competitive with D7k or 60d.
If you want to call Pentax liars, be my guest, but this is from the horses mouth, Pentax

I will REPEAT myself also.

TOO BAD THE SPECS ARE ON PAR WITH THE 60D and D7000!!!

So pricing higher than its nearest competitive models is a good strategy? I really hope the $1600 for body-only is exaggerated or the price will drop considerably by December (when I plan to upgrade from my Kx).
