K5 in d300s & 7D class not d7000

There's a lot of talk about what class this camera is in. After looking at the specs and price it is clearly geared to compete with the d300s or the Canon 7D but I'm sure will compete with the d7000 as well.

I also think this camera will stick around for a while like the k20D.

??

The K20D was announced 01-23-08, 495 days after the K10D (09-16-06).
The K-7 was announced 05-20-09, 484 days after the K20D.
The K-5 was announced 09-20-2010, 489 days after the K-7.

How exactly did the K20D stick around any longer than any of Pentax's past flagships? They arrive almost like clockwork...

Side note: If the schedule continues unabated, I'd expect the K-5's successor to be announced on Monday, January 23, 2012. ;-)

I love Pentax as much as the next guy here, but the K5 is no way in comparison with the 7D. I am not a Canon guy, but even I know that the 7D wipes the floor against the K5 in a lot of categories. The 60D is the K5's closest Canon competitor. The D7000 already made the D300s irrelevant in some ways, but the D7000 is in the direct market as the K5. So think what you will, because it just ain't true.

I'm still happy and excited for this camera; if only the price is lower, might wait till next year to pick one up to replace my K-x.

And vice-versa I feel. I remember the K-7 was voted the better overall camera on a few photography web sites (but please don't ask which ones, I can't remember!)

On a price point basis they certainly compete. The K-5 costs as much as a 7D.

Certainly not dissimilar, anyway. The 7D has an MSRP of US$1,700, unchanged since it launched a year ago. That's $100 more than the K-5's launch MSRP.

Obviously the 7D doesn't sell for list any more, though. It can be had for $1,500 body-only retail, from reputable dealers. Nobody knows what the K-5's retail pricing will be currently, at least outside of Pentax themselves. So no comparison can be made there.
