agree

Agree with others. The Pentax click to put it in your basket to see the real price is going to do damage, how. In generating interest. The D7000 is generating a lot of interest because of what it offers, the name Nikon and its low price. Pentax is losing sales over this as we speak/write...

Its amazing how many posts I have read where people are interested but not at this price. Also Pentax should have learned with the K20D a second generation body can't fetch a premium a new body can. The K10 could sell for much higher than anything before it, but not the K20D. The K-7 could sell for higher, but the K-5 will struggle big time and in the end may give Pentax a poor year due to pricing too high. The K-r should have had WR this would have stoled all the entry level kit sales; the K-5 should come down right now to $1299 to maintain a high sales volume. The longer Pentax waits the less sales they will have. Now the real deal will be the reviews. If the Pentax K-5 does not have IQ higher than the D7000 or some others, or AF performance equal to that of the D7000 and Pentax knows this now, they are arrogant and won't learn from the past. They just see share holders; which is fine. But share holders want to see profits and the world is letting Pentax know how "hey we are interested but the price is just a bit too high, could you drop it by a few hundred and join in on all the dSLR sales, we know Pentax makes quality rugged field dSLRs but don't have the tracking and other performance of Canon and Nikon who invested a lot of money in their AF systems. We know Pentax is upgrading but still no major investments in AF". Pentax learn how people see you and set the price right. Rugged value dSLRs. $1700 for a K-7 with a new sensor and micro-processor upgrades but no memory (buffer) upgrade, and a new AF module. Thats just keeping it in the game, not an excuse to raise the price like its a breakthrough new concept camera! We just see greed.

And BTW it's not being spoiled Americans. We can buy Nikons D7000 for a lot less than the K-5 as of now. It's just being realistic. Which would new buyers pick the Nikon or Pentax if they have the same IQ and the Nikons AF is a bit better?

for a k5 + kit lens at $1700, you can almost get a d7000 + 16-85 lens

if pentax thinks they can and will be able to sell lots of k5's and kr's at these prices, well, they can count me out.

i'll hold on to my kx/k200 and who knows? i might just sell a few lenses and end up w/ 2 systems.

I don't think anyone really knows what the K5 will sell for in the US. In general, list prices are pretty useless on Pentax products. Just go to B and H and browse the DA limiteds. Half of them won't even show a price -- the ones that do show prices that are significantly higher than what they really sell for (eg the DA 40 is listed at 499, but then when added to the cart it drops to 339).

Amazon is covering themselves that they aren't offering a price that is lower than what they will get the camera and end up selling at a loss.

In the end, early adopters always pay a higher price.

true with the history of pentax bodies. k7 from 1299 now down to 850+.
while the D90 $999 now around $850.

so how many will really adapt early when the historical prices of pentax bodies don't seem to hold value as long?

guess we'll see in a few weeks what Pentax's marketing has been doing or ... not doing.
