how bout waiting for the new DA18-135? it's WR as well, right? not to mention it covers all the essential focal lengths and it's cheaper.

I've had a p&s and while I may appreciate the recommendation I never got what I wanted out of a nice p&s

not sure what you are referencing to when you say the photographic world is taking a turn

I would wait until the end of October when the new K-5 and the 18-135 WR are on the market, this combination will be the ideal kit for you to start with and you will keep a lot of money in your pocket compared to the other kit (K-7 with 16-50 and 50-135). With this money you can add some accesories like a tripod, circular polarizor, flash and perhaps some ND filters as well.
