Any Teleconverter yet? Sigma 70-200

Is there any teleconverter (1.4x or 2.0x) out there yet that is compatible with the Pentax K10d and the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 II (the newer, auto-focus version)

When I bought the lens 2 years ago, none was available but Sigma was talking about one, but…

I bought that one and returned it. It's only comptable with the older 70-200 Sigma. Maybe some day...

I do not really "need" a longer lens, thus the desire for a converter for those times (outdoors with animals or birds) when it would be wonderful to get close.

I believe the Pentax 1.7 TC and the Kenko 1.5x Pz-AF Teleplus SHQ teleconverter work with this lens. Can someone help me confirm this?

there are reports the kenko and also tamron TCs for the old Power Zoom lenses work, I say reports only because I do not have one to validate it personally.

BUT. the pentax SMC-F-1.7x AF Copverter does not provide true AF with any lens it is attached to, what happens is the lens must be focused close to correct focus manually, and hten the focusing elements in the adaptor work to provide limited range AF with your lens.

This dilemma may be one of the few reasons to choose Canon or Nikon over Pentax. Given the volume of sales, it might not be "worth" Sigma's time and expense to develop the TC for Pentax.

Hi,

I have the Sigma 70-200 HSMII and the Kenko pzAF 1.5 Teleplus SHQ and can confirm that it does work - sorta. Sometimes it will lock focus quickly, other times it will 'hunt' a lot. Using full time manual over-ride to close focus first helps. Image quality is very good though. HTH

It is certainly a factor in my next purchase, whenever that may be.

I use the tamron 1.4 and kenko 1.5 on my sigma 70-200 without any trouble. When I have trouble auto focusing a lens with the teleconverter, I manual focus then turn on auto focus.
check the items for sale in this forum.

Hi folks,

I just got the Kenko 1.5 teleconverter. It has trouble finding the right fstop and shutter speed in low light, which I think I can correct.

But I cannot get it to autofocus at all in any setting. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Is your TC the Kenko Pz-AF 1.5X SHQ? If so, it should autofocus - mine does well in good light. Have you tried cleaning the contacts, particularly the 'pz' or 'SDM'. From your OP, I'm assuming your talking about the Sigma 70-200 HSM II which is what I have. I use AV mostly and like the TC in good light but mine does hunt full range in lower light (indoor room light levels). What exposure mode & settings are you using? Let me know and I'll try that with mine! Sorry I'm not much help.

Hi , Yup that's my new converter. I cleaned all of the connections with lens cleaner (any other liquids recommended ?)

Still no auto focus in any setting. In additiom, when, in AV for example, I select an f stop, the shutter speeds hunt (jump all over the shutter speeds) and vice versa in TV. Sound familiar?

I strongly suspect that the converter is fine and that I simply need to learn how make it work.

Hi,

Really strange. I tried mine with/without TC in AV mode outdoors - overcast! At 2.8 and 8.0 (only ones I tried); without TC quick autofocus and lock - no shutter speed changing; with TC a little hunting but did lock and no shutter changing. It is faster without the TC but it always tries to focus with the TC. Have no idea why you're not getting autfocus. Really weird - hope you can get it sorted.
