New Pentax firmware in action - Video

A member by the name of kevinon was kind enough to post this on DPReview, and I though it was worth sharing here as well.

This is odd, are we not getting more jpegs then raws anymore? Are a jpeg as large as a compressed raw file?

Very impressive. I wonder what ISO he was shooting at.

And how did he manage to get hold of the new firmware?

The Pentaxforums - Pentax Camera Comparison - says the K-5 has Lo: 2fps and Hi: 7fps modes.

Would have been nice to have a "Med: 3,5 - 4fps" setting, like the K20D Hi mode, which I find perfect for most kinds of series of images, 2 fps might be a bit on the low side...

Count faster JohnB. More than 25 jpgs coming out I believe (28 or 29, just like firmware 1.00).

...and sure, bragging rights if it has 100 shots in the buffer but OMG what a PP nightmare when I come home with 80GB of shots cause its so much fun to just hold that button down. I have 2,400 frames on my K-5 so far, yes, lots of playing, but have been out most every day for BIFs and any other critter and have not used a burst longer than 8 yet. Maybe its a sports thing?? Catch the kick off, run for touchdown, you get a frame every step of the way with 100shots.

Yeah, I can already squeeze out 30 jpegs with the default firmware- I'm looking for an upgrade to 40!

I believe you but OMG, either the demo is flakey or the jpg is being downgraded. If the firmware really only ups the RAW but cuts the JPG then I guess JPG shooters need not apply.

According to the manual the Lo is only 1.6fps. I agree with you even 2fps is slow. I wonder if 1.6fps is simply the maximum speed it can process and write to a typical SDHC card thus allowing for continuous shooting until the card is full.

No problem, I was curious too.
I did the first test by tapping my pen along with the frames and counting the dots afterward

But the slow-mo felt far more positive.

Also, I think this video test is a bit strange tbh.
I too can't understand why there would be a drop in JPG performance :/
Hopefully someone will address this and it will all make sense.

Also... lets not overlook obvious things such as the type of card used etc. etc.

It's possible, if the K-5 uses the same speed grade of memory as my 4 year old K10D, which could shoot at about 3FPS until the card was full. Using the same speed of memory to move larger-size files could explain the low 1.6FPS.

I tried to enhance the frame count on the LCD and can get the ending (622) but not the beginning. bleh...

How did you slow it? Nifty utility on the box that slows the playback or rerecord it?

Last, I may need some of the formally educated engineers to jump in but I don't see how the card affects burst speed/capacity unless its writing to the card from frame 1 and frees up space for a couple frames by frame 25. Guess I am about to go find an old slow 32MB (yes, MB) card to test with.....will be back
