I know the K-x might now be a little "passé" with the new Pentax DSLRs, but…

I'm about a week away from purchasing mine (it's all I can afford as a "poor" graduate student). I'm so excited about it. I've been saving up a nice piece of my stipend (and eating cheaply like a typical college student) for months!

I'll also be getting Photoshop Elements 9 so I can finally edit my pic size down and post some pictures here.

The Kx is a sweet little camera... Mine was often used more than my K7, due to its small size, great high-iso, and big DR...

Now I've sold both and bought the K5, but still miss the small size!

You won't regret this decision.

You should not regret that, it's a great camera and a great time to buy too.
I see Adorama has a nice rebate bundle on offer current;
--------
$499.00 K-x w/ 18-55
16301 Pentax K-x Digital SLR Black Camera Kit with Black 18-55mm DA-L Lens
$299.95 Epson Stylus R1900
C11C698201 Epson Stylus Photo R1900, 13" Wide Inkjet Color Printer, 8 Color, with USB 2.0
--------
= $798.95 Outlay
- $450.00 Mail-in Rebate
Rebate Info
http://www.adorama.com/pdfs/rebates/epson_R1900_CPN.pdf
======
= $348.95 Total (after rebate) for new K-x + Lens + good photo Printer.
======

Note: This USD499 K-x above might not be eligible like Adorama website suggests!
The Epson .PDF states that "A camera with a purchase price of USD549 or greater (before taxes)".
So it would cost another 50 bucks. Still OK though.

This one at USD549.33 incl useful extras should qualify:

It is a great camera, even in absolute terms, and at the price quite a bargain. Be sure the check out the battery issue, though. There should be multiple threads here, but in short: update the firmware if not >= 1.01, Eneloop NiMhs are highly recommend. Also, the k-x is well suited for one on a budget as the 18-55 kit lens is a quality piece for the price and older inexpensive quality lenses can be used with it.

You can get a really nice Pentax K-x in the For Sale forums for around 420 dollars, used, with few shutter actuations, around 1000 or so. The shutter rating on the Pentax K-x is average is 100,000, I'm at 10,000 still going strong.
Start with the kit lens, and work on up,

And dont worry if camera doesnt look like anybody else's. I go to a photography school and in a room full of people, I am the only Pentax shooter, (the K-x has the same sensor as the Nikon D90 and D5000)

Pentax best band per buck!!

One of the best of the current (almost previous) generation of mid-range camera's. The K-x won't dissapoint and it's all but passé. Sure the K-r has some advantages but the image quality difference between those two camera's is neglible (same sensor).

I have the K20D also but on holidays my K-x got much more use because the K-x is much better suited for lugging around all day.

You won't regret. Believe me! I'm buying the K-5 in December but I'll keep my K-x until I prove myself I don't need it anymore. And that's going to be tough...

Save your money, there are two free solutions:

1) GIMP (open source photoshop)
2) Scarab Darkroom (a very simple alternative to Lightoom/Aperture)

That looks like a really good deal if you are in the market for a K-x.

Trust me, the Kx is still a great camera and for the $ I think it is a better deal than the Kr so you will not be disappointed whatsoever. Best entry-level DSLR on the market in my opinion.

K-x will serve you well.

If you go to the dxomark.com site, and do a sensor comparison between say the K-5, K-x and something else good like the Nikon D90, and look at the various charts, you will see that the K-x has a performance profile that is sometimes almost indistinguishable from the others on practically every measure.

+1. The fact that you don't lug around several sets of proprietary batteries and a charger (maybe with multiple plugs) makes it one of the best travel cameras ever.
