What would you personally choose for landscape photography

I'd like to know what you would personally choose, if money wasn't the deciding factor, for landscape photography out of:

- Pentax K5 with 15mm ƒ4 and 31mm ƒ1.8 Limited lenses

- Canon 5D MK II with Carl Zeiss 28mm ƒ2 and 35mm ƒ2

I'm more concerned with image quality, ergonomics and build quality. My prints don't exceed 16x24" and never use anything above base ISO.

Another poll that can't even get going :-)

But I voted K5 so I can use my other lenses.

The purpose is to help me choose between a setup. These are the only two options because they are the only two that I'm considering.

You don't have to like the options, just pick the one you think is better

I shoot the same way. From what I've seen and read about the K5 (from actual users), it is on a par with the 5D, so I think either body will do.
I own the DA 35mm macro Limited. It is the most versatile lens of all, macro and close to mid-range detail and color are superior--but it is not a good landscape lens. Believe me, I tried to make it work for landscapes. Sweet spot is 7.1. It's a close focus lens, not a landscape lens.
I've long been a fan of Zeiss glass and have owned a few, but in almost 40 years of serious shooting, the DA 15mm Limited is the best landscape lens I've used. It's magical. Sweet spot is around f-11! But you didn't list that in your choices. The 21 is also a very good lens.
However, if I had to stay within the choices you list, I'd go with the 5D mostly because the Zeiss glass you list would be better for landscapes.

That's really good information Ron. So what would it be if I changed the 35mm ƒ2.8 to the 31mm ƒ1.8?

If the 15mm Limited is very good I'd probably change it around with the 21mm too. I was trying to decide between that and the 21mm.

I don't know how to change the poll answers though?

dynamic range is excellent with the K-5 (beats the Canon).

I also like that the K-5 is smaller.

Be warned: This is a Pentax forum. Expect the results to be skewed toward Pentax.

I am the same boat as you Peter. Was looking to upgrade to a FF from the K20D but now the K5 has thrown a spanner in the works. I only have two lenses at the moment, the Sigma 10-20 and the Sigma 24-60. The wide angle is hardly ever off the camera, I love it. Havn't bought any Pentax glass yet as was waiting to see what was going to happen.
My initial choice was going to be the Sony A850 and some CZ glass, but seriously considering the K5. Can keep my lenses and only have spend about $1400 (when the price comes down). Then maybe pick up the 15mm LTD....sounds like a great lens. My brother (who also does landscapes) picked up a 5D Mk2, but to be honest I wasn't that impressed with it.

Secateurs you're quite right, I expect it to be biased. However, going to any other forum would have a bias towards the 5D MKII, so it's not really going to be accurate either way.

Ozlizard, I'm in a slightly different boat. I already have the 5D MKII. I've broken it once, that left $900 of repairs and am not completely impressed with the image quality. It has awful banding issues.

I was also considering the A850 but I don't trust Sony. They seem to be throwing anything at the wall at the moment to see if it sticks. Whether they continue to make full frame remains to be seen.

The Pentax K5, although a smaller sensor seemed like an alternative that may have as good image quality as the 5D MKII.

Just checked the price for the 15mm in Australia, the cheapest is about $900+ but at B&H only $556 including postage to Australia! Bless that Aussie dollar!

Yes it sure is. The K5 has really cut down the difference between FF and Aps-c, I'll have to admit it's a bigger jump up than I thought at first. I can easily print up to 40"x14" (pano) with my K20, and really don't need to go much bigger, but with the K5 I should be able to. That was the main reason for getting a FF=bigger prints/more pp headroom, but if I can get all that for about $1,000 less with the K5, plus word beating DR...it's very tempting.

Do you stitch your panos or just crop out the center?

Do you think the 5D MKII would actually be able to create larger prints? It's not a very big resolution difference. I'm also wondering if the post production might have more headroom with the K5, given the large dynamic range.
