How does Pentax come up with model numbers?

The K20D was an obvious progression from the K10D.
We had K100D and K200D. K200D replaced the K100D - that part makes sense, but why were the hundreds models basically stripped down versions of the tens? Shouldn't it be the other way around from a numbering standpoint?

Looking at the model numbers, you'd think that the K2000D would be the granddaddy of them all - Not quite.

K-m, K-x, K-r - like picking letters out of a hat. No logical progression at all as the cameras get better.

K-5, K-7 - Again, you'd think the K-7 would be the better of the two, no?

Who comes up with this stuff? And what's he drinking?

That is old school numbering scheme - Pentax is staying away from that... good.

You see Can** 10D, 20D, 30D.... 60D. How do you figure 7D comes in APS-C sensor whereas 5D is a FF sensor... That is rather odd, don't you think?

Also, what do you think of 90D progressing to D7000? That is more ridiculous to me. Nik** is all over the places... D700 is FF, D300 is APS-C, D5000/D3000... and then D1 and D3.... absurd to me to say the least...

In the camera world the lower the number the higher the model....sometimes

The Canon and Nikon big guns are numbered to make sense. But D90 followed D7000 and the 7D/5D thing I don't get.

KX and KM were Pentax film bodies. So was the K1000 (so you get the digital K2000). K2 was a high end film body (lineage for the K-7,K-5).

Sometimes it all makes sense, sometimes its a bunch of crap as they try to reposition new bodies.

To be fair, the D7000 doesn't replace the D90, although figures show it should. It seats between the D90 and the D300s.... i don't know... haha

I think some marketing guys sit around over a few beers and say "what will we call this one?" They will want to be a little different as not to confuse their product with the other guys. I think the switch to a single digit number was a good one as Canon was using 30D and 50D and now 60D and Nikon has now jumped to 4 digit model numbers. Canon does have a 7D also which might have been confused with the K7. With every manufacturer coming out with new models every year, it will continue to get interesting.
