Can flash unit damage DSLR?

Up until now I have only used the built-in flash in my K200D. Thinking about buying an external. Apparently flashes can have either or both of High Voltage or Low Voltage triggers - whatever that means. Sounds like it might be important as apparently installing a HV flash on some new digital cameras can actually damage the camera. Does anyone have some knowledge about this? How can one tell whether HV or LV trigger and is there any truth in the damage risk? Obviously any Pentax flash would be fine but how about OEMs?
Thanks,
Pete

Flash made within the past 5-10 years should be fine.Up to 20 volts trigger, should not harm todays new DSLR.Use a volt meter to check ground and main hot shoe contacts, with flash turned on.I use an old Minolta auto flash from the early 80s on my K10,20D,K7,K5.As old as the Minolta is the trigger is only 6 volts.
I have always wondered why Pentax never gives the safe trigger voltage in its specs sheets ?

You'll find everything you need to know at this page about Strobe Trigger Voltages.

If you search this forum, you'll also find many threads on this topic. I once started one polling users for the highest trigger voltage their camera survived on a continues basis. It seems like Pentax DSLRs can take up to 30V, but the official value is 5V (the maximum of all Pentax flashes).
