Refurbs can be great value and often aren't refurbed!

I've bought a couple of refurbs over the years, including a K10D that turned out to be better than my original and cost me less than $300.

It seems that "refurb" is often a general term used to cover old stock and recycled cameras that might actually be new but can't be sold as such.

I still use a K20D as my main camera and at around $500 is still a good buy, in my opinion.

The refurb offer recently was from buy.com at $499.95, but some folks found extra coupons that dropped it to around $480. Not sure if there are any still available, but I did spot a couple on eBay too.

There is a link in Pentax Price Watch.

I recently bought one of these K20D refurb packages (actually from Woot, not Buy.com, but I'd expect them to be of equal quality). It came looking like new, according to photome, it only had ~115 shutter actuations. It still had a very early firmware as well, which I promptly upgraded to 1.04. Haven't done much shooting with it yet, but so far, it is impressive. The build quality and feel are far superior to my previous K100D. I haven't used the K-x, but to me, the top LCD is essential and I would never buy an SLR camera without one. One of the reasons I wanted to upgrade my K100D is for the dust/weather sealing. My K100D was getting noticeable amounts of dust inside, and that was after only 18 months of use (I obtained my K100D on a very late closeout from Wolf). The weather sealing cannot be underestimated IMHO.

kx

My only complaint with the kx is how it does the mechanics of bracketed exposures. Can't get used to it. The K20 is so much smoother when using this feature
