Camera Settings Exposed !

Exposure Plot

I've just run this again to see what I'm shooting (it's a free windows software program from vAndel - freeware runs fine on my Mac using Crossover). Some interesting results !

Run on my Picture folders. What an eye opener, I'd never have guessed !

1. 17.62% @ 90 mm (guess that would be all my macro shots with the Tammy 90)
2. 10.35% @ 43 to 50mm (43 Ltd & FA 50/1.4)
3. 9.76% @ 10mm (Sigma 10-20)
4. 4.01% @ 11mm (Sigma 10-20)
5. 3.97% @ 60mm (various)
6. 3.87% @ 20mm (Sigma 10-20)
7. 3.69% @ 80mm (55-300)
8. 3.48% @ 300mm (55-300)

ISO

400 - 22.72%
800 - 16.55%
200 - 10.47%
100 - 9.92%
125 - 8.86%

Aperture
5.6 : 17.91%
4.0 : 13.47%
8.0 : 9.82%
1.4 : 5.50%
2.8 : 4.92%

Shutter
1/180 : 12.48%
1/200 : 12.48%
1/30 : 7.45%
1/125 : 5.72%
1/80 : 5.36%

Download it and give it a go !

Cool tool. But very dependable on shoting condition and lenses.
Aperture: try to move around sweet spot each lens, or wide enough to blur (f2.8-f4), most f5.6
Shutter: for ambient, 1/20s or 1/80-1/125
Iso: most at 200, then 400-640 or max acceptable noise on my k20, rest at 800-1200.
Flash always, i m addicted to this device ;-)

Interesting info to dig into, but why are none of the categories anywhere near 100% when totaled?

Because there is a wide spread of figures in between, under and over those given. I guess that's because I have an interest in a wide range of subjects, from macro through street to architecture & landscapes rather than just one main subject (e.g. birding)

but this only adds to 60%, where the hell did the other 40% of the shots go?

also if you add up the sigma 10-20 it is by far the most commonly used lens in your kit. the total percentage at about 18% is similar to my experience where I use the 10-20 for about 20% of my shots

Interesting program.

The first is from my K7 after a year of use. I'll have to take the software's word for it as I'm not going to go through and manually check 8000 photos.

The K5. Aside from my 50mm Shootout which is not reflected here, I've used the FA*85 almost exclusively.

I'm wondering however exactly Which files it looks at. I shoot RAW+JPG and I save my DNG > JPG keepers in the same folders as the original files. My storage method is simply sorted by date taken which works for me. So some of these may be double or even triple counts. If it just looks at JPGs (non-RAW), then the results are probably pretty close (my K5 shutter count is around 1200 right now). If however it also looks at RAW files, then this information is way off.

Still interesting to see where I spend my focal length time however..

Yep, me three. I downloaded this utility (actually Wega2) when a link to ExPlot was posted on here a few days ago, and immediately found that Ms Tammy Ninety and Mr Siggy TenTwenty had both stamped their footprints all over my hard drives in no uncertain terms.

Going to run this tonight when I get home.

Jeff, your results could be quite skewed if you delete a bunch of JPEGs but keep RAWS.

No, I don't delete them, what I'm saying is that in addition to the out of camera JPGs, Are the ones I create from RAW in ACR/Photoshop. Not all get converted however. My curiosity was more if it counts the DNG files as well.

Nope, me no tink him does, no Dirty Naughty Graphics in my ExPlot PathList anyway.

Fwiw; Wega2/ExPlot doesn't support Context or Menu in it's window panes but you can easily do a pretty mean Select and Copy of the list and then Paste into your fave Text editor, Excel or whatever for further search, sort, counting... extrapolations and basic analysis.

From the Exposureplot help file, and the website, it seems that it only looks at jpegs:
QuoteQuote:
Use Exposureplot to analyze your collection of JPG files, Exposureplot collects focal lens length, (35mm equivalent), ISO values, aperture and shutter speed data from the EXIF headers of the JPG files.
QuoteQuote:

Here are what my stats looks like:

The results aren't really surprising, since most people tend to use the ends of their zoom lenses:
The 10mm peak corresponds with my 10-20mm
The 17mm peak corresponds with my 17-70/17-50
The 70mm peak corresponds with my 17-70/70-200mm

interesting observation. If most of the shots are taken at the wide end or tele end of the zoom, would it be better to just go get a prime lens of matching focal length? i.e. if most of the shot is a 70mm out of a 17-70 or 70-200, just get a DA70 or something?
