Tried again, bought another used K20D, is this to high a shutter count though?

Here is the bid: Pentax K20D 14.6 MP DSLR with BG-2 Grip and Extras! - eBay (item 320641370707 end time Jan-10-11 11:03:11 PST)

So basically is 8729 a high shuttercount? Also should I get a squaretrade warranty to be on the safe side? 2 years for 120 dollars is a bit much but...might be worth it I suppose.

8729 is not a high shutter count IMHO as you should see at least 50,000 activations on the unit. my guess is long before the shutter count is an issue you will have upgraded
You would have to shoot 30 pictures a day every day for the next 4 years to get to 50000
As for the warranty it's a security blanket. it's up to you but personally i never buy them

I hope to find a nice K20D with less than 10k shots on it one of these days! That chart you referred to shows a shutter life probability of 93.5% to achieving over 286,000 clicks. That would make me nervous, too

Maybe I read wrong, saw a bunch that died around the shutter I bought it at...I am a paranoid person lately, probably just me being silly.

it's 3 dead units on a statistically irrelevant sample group for the most part (only 62 actual reported counts)
for a statistically valid sample assuming 10000 units sold worldwide (a very low estimate i would think) you would need a sample of at least 583 people)
Web sites like this basically end up spreading no useful information and effectively breed uncertainty in people
Go for it, I haven't seen any complaints about the shutter here, and if it was not reliable you can be sure people would have been bitching about it for ages

i forgot you had some bad luck, so yep i would think the odds are in your favour to be one of the 93% making it to 286000 click
Good luck

My 2 year old K20D is just starting to get warmed up at 73,573 clicks. Anything under 10,000 needs some love and use.

Yeah I have not had so much good luck with Pentax cameras lately, though I have had relatively good luck with used lenses. 3 lenses ready to use, just waiting on a camera haha.

I'm with Eddie here - even if it's your 3rd one (?) I wouldn't worry too much about your camera dying anytime soon. I think the k20 is probably one of the most durable DSLR's out there - enjoy!

Well I bought a K-5 new and it had stains, then I bought a K20D from Adorama(still have to return) and its wheel was messed up. This will be my 3rd try.

Thanks, I sure hope so! I love the way the K20D feels compared to my other cameras though...lovely build.

For that side of shutters: it doesn't say on what disease the camera's died! You think it's the shutter, but if you drop your camera, the thing is also dead.

For K20D the shutter should be good for 100.000 as all recent camera's from pentax.

It is your money. A new shutter cost me $325 cdn 18 months ago in my K10. So if you think there is a 1/3 chance or worse of shutter failure go for the warranty if not don't
