A simpler solution is simply to remove the card from the camera and keep it with you. As soon as I finish a shoot I download everything to a P2000. The card, still full, goes in my pocket case. A fresh card goes in the camera.
If she had had all her spare cards in the camera bag they would all have been stolen too.
