K7 noise settings

Hi all, what noise setting do you use on the K7? If I set the noise setting to high, and to kick in around 400, I get preaty blotchy look sky's. I do have nik software's dfine noise plugin, and topaz, but they don't seem to get rid of the bloches. It's not dust because it goes away, and turns more to grain if I lower the noise reduction. It can then be cleaned up nicely with dfine. you can really only see this in sky's.

Thanks for that link, Frogfish !

I have been using "NR Off" for a while now, as I shoot RAW+JPG and apply NR in post-process, but the results I've seen in Adam's thread are very interesting. I'll give them a try for sure. One of my goals for this year is to reduce the time I spend in PP, so anything that results in more usable JPGs sounds good to me !

Generally I prefer to have noise reduction off in camera and use noise ninja or similar as a final step in post processing of DNG files to JPEG.

I use high, above ISO 800. I think it was one of Adam`s recommendations.

Actually Adam said he changed the low iso from 800 to 400.

You already had some good response and advice. Let me add a personal experience with the K-7.

I shoot outdoor primarily and in low-light conditions from time to time. I achieve excellent low-light performances with my K-7 using either of the 3 approaches:

(a) with some in-camera PP, it is possible to get very nice shots either with in-camera PP (K-7 High ISO Success!). I tend to setup Adam's settings in my K-7 User mode. I use High NR starting from ISO 400.

(b) with some dedicated noise reduction software (Noiseware in my case). In that case, I set no NR in-camera and I shoot up to ISO 3200.

(c) The third method is the use of a fast prime lens (eg f1.4). In very dark conditions, this is the best technique using MF.

The first two approaches involve some some NR. Like sjwaldron, I obtain the best results using in-computer PP with a dedicated software (approach (b)). The first approach (a) requires no PP nor any software. You simply the camera on-board High-ISO noise reduction and it works fine.

However my best shots in low-light were always achieved with my Voigtlander Nokton 58 mm f1.4 lens. (In that case, I apply no NR in-camera.)

Hop that the comment will help.

Must have missed that, I am normally good to go up to ISO 800.
