I am surprised that nobody recommended the 35 macro ltd. Why is that? I have the 15 and 70 ltd, and a 35 is on the way to complete the kit. Is AF really that slow? Or is there some other reason?
OP has a 40 already.

WA-surfer already has the DA40Ltd. Why add DA35Ltd and still lack wide angle capabilities?

Ok, yeah I see.
But how are your thoughts on using a 35ltd over the 40ltd for a travel kit?

As you are getting one already, you can determine that yourself And let us know if it works or not

I don't have the lens so can't judge it. From a focal length perspective, it will be good; personally I will prefer something between 30mm and 35mm over 40mm for a general purpose lens (on an APSc body).

I don't have the 40Ltd, so I can't really say whether its smaller size and quicker focusing is worth giving up macro for. Personally I'd rather have the macro.

I have traveled with both the DA 40 and the DA 35. It is truly a tough call. I prefer the FOV with the 35ltd more as it is a little wider. With the 40ltd, I always seemed to be backing up or craning my neck backwards to get the shot I wanted (I tend to like perspective in my shots). It was especially noticeable when attempting to take photos of wife (e.g. across the table from one another, in the same train car, etc).

That being said, the AF is noticeably faster on the 40tld (as numerous threads have mentioned), but the AF is not so slow on the 35ltd as to be overly problematic. Also, the 40ltd seems to get that limited "pop" far more frequently than the 35ltd. Finally, the 40 is sometimes easier to use and get in/out of my bag because it protrudes less and the 35ltd cap constantly falls off.

On the other hand, the close focusing is nice to have on the 35ltd. I didn't shoot "true" macro often, but with the 40tld I had just enough minimum focusing distance problems to be annoying.

In short, it is whatever style you shoot (as others have mentioned). If I can start to get that limited "pop" more consistently with the DA 35mm ltd then it is a done deal for me as the FOV and macro is great for travel and the slower focusing doesn't really bother me.

To answer the OP, in my Eastern Europe trip I used only my Pentax 17-70 and the DA 40 with no problems. And in Japan, I used only the 15, 35, and the 135 M with no problems. The 135 M is basically too long for me but it is my only light lens with any reach right now. Small, light lenses are one of my most important criteria. For me, a 15/35/70 combo would be PERFECT (once I can afford the 70).
